Duke Freshman outs herself

The real story here IMO, is how ****ing expensive it is to go to college now.
Thoughts?
QFT
About 40 grand a year. That doesnt include room & board or "Fees". On a positive note since Duke, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern and Vanderbilt (all comparable schools) are private, their out of state rates are about the same as in state.
So when complete the avg college grad will have no job and about $200 grand in student loans. Well, unless youre a porn star.0 -
I agree that she is an adult and can earn her money whatever legal way she wants, however, she is still representing the university. I understand that as adults, we should be allowed to legally do what we want with our lives, but when you are doing something on the side that could have a negative impact on your school or regular place of business, then it's time to get your priorities in line. Does she want to be a porn star? Great more power to her! Does she want a desk job after college? That's fine too, but she needs to decide what she wants more.
I think if you are starring in pornography, something went wrong in your life somewhere and it's sad. But if it's what she's chosen, it's her business. Condemning her won't help her in any way.0 -

It couldn't possibly be because someone likes sex and it's good money?0 -
I googled her and she sure didn't have a long career. Then again that industry is dying off due to free stuff online. I wonder how anyone at the school found out the harass her about it. The only reason that kid at the local college got caught was the school did some digging to see where he was getting large amounts of cash and outed him for it.
Someone at Duke saw her in a video, and then told all of his fraternity brothers about it, even when she asked him not to spread it around campus. Naturally, everyone else found out soon after. Also, as yet her career isn't over. She has repeatedly said that she still plans to work in porn because she wants to0 -
I think it's despicable that most everyone watches porn and then look down on the people who make it. Seriously.
It depends on how you are classifying the people who "make" it.
A lot of performers, both male but particularly female drift into the industry (from what I understand) through reasons other than pure choice. Many have been come from a background of sexual abuse, drug addiction, and chaotic home environments. These people are essentially vulnerable. They are then ruthlessly exploited by producers.
It is wrong to look down on the performers? In many cases yes. Is it wrong to look down on the producers? Absolutely not.
I understand what you're saying. But if you (royal you) feel that way then you also had better not watch it. Otherwise you're the one guilty of funding the industry you feel is so rotten.
Watch porn or don't, but don't be a hypocrite about it.
I've actually rarely watch it any more after reading the expose "Hollywood Blue".
But yet you still do..
Yes, within certain parameters I believe are ok (which I would prefer not to go into on a public forum because...well...)
I am not saying all of the industry is bad, but a lot of it.0 -
This is why I'm a Tarheel Fan!!!!!!!!
Really? some girl at Duke doing porn is the reason you root for UNC?
that's a strange way to determine fandom, but to each his own.0 -
I don't see the big deal. Yay for her for going to college!! :drinker:0

I think mostly the whole thing is still an issue of society still wanting to control women's sexuality. And when women don't behave as they should it freaks people out. That's what I think it really comes down too.
That's a major part of it. Leftover puritanical nonsense. It's a legal industry, but they're treated like scum and shunned. It'd be one thing if it really were seedy back alley type stuff like in the old days. But it's a billion dollar business now.
People (not all) want to watch, have their fun, and afterwards their feelings of shame pop up so they put that on the people who make it. I think that's pretty rotten.
If you really oppose porn and don't watch I get it. I even respect you.
I agree. What really sucks is how that shame turns into hate. If you don't like her, don't approve, move on with your day. But not surprisingly, people are threatening her and saying the most hurtful things they can think of.0 -
Wow this forum took a turn the wrong way. Why are we debating the morality of pornography?
Here's the facts:
-There is nothing (from publicly available information I found) that would say her actions in any way jeopardize her ability to PAY to attend school at Duke. None.
-She has a job. A LEGAL job. She is 18+ years old, and she is a part of a legal industry making legal money. This is literally no different than if she worked as a waitress at a high-end restaurant and made crazy cash off of it. NO DIFFERENCE.
-She is PAYING to go to school there. She is not a representative of Duke University, because she is not staff or adjunct faculty in any capacity. College kids do things every minute that are more damaging/embarassing to a University than legitimately performing pornography.
-She will get more opportunities to make LARGE AMOUNTS of cash in porn BECAUSE she is now "the Duke girl". It won't last forever, but her 15 minutes of fame in the porn industry will be lucrative, and she will easily be able to pay for her education from it.
It doesn't matter what she's majoring in. She is not our child. She is legit, and she's doing it her way. Whether or not you agree philosophically with "her way" is a moot point.

Wait....you said that producers "ruthlessly exploit" these poor souls and THEN You go on to say that it's NOT WRONG to look down on them for doing that?
what is WRONG with you?
Doh! That was a typo on my behalf. I meant the following: "Is it right to look down on the producers? Absolutely"
Ahhhhh...gotcha. that makes more sense.0 -

Does anyone shy away from Duke when a Duke MBA defrauds millions? IMO the idea that she is disgracing the college is a falicy.0 -
I have very low if not absolutely no respect for the porn industry and how they treat / depict women
however I respect the women who choose to earn their living in the sex industry very much and I respect this women for doing what she chooses to with her own body & not allowing others to make her feel shame about it0 -

I think that we are debating the morality of porn because that is what is at the crux of needing to "out herself" as a porn star. The fact that sex workers are subjected to such moral judgement during and long after their careers all boils down to the fact that many in society feel that porn is wrong (whether that is because of religious beliefs or some other moral objections). If the stigma was not there, she would not have felt a need to hide how it is that she was earning her tuition money, the teacher who lost her job long after her porn career had ended would still be teaching, etc.
We (as a society) need to get over our hangups with sex.0 -

Actually, that is likely the case for very many porn stars. Stop projecting your own feelings about porn on to those who make it.0 -

I was thinking this as well, but then thought maybe that the person is some sort of an expert on what happens in the industry.0 -
I firmly believe that 17, 18, and 19 year olds don't understand how their actions now will affect them later in life.
Things I didn't understand the consequences of at 17-19:
-The expense of private college education (mine was much cheaper than Duke)
-How stretching my lobes to 5/8 inch wasn't a good idea long term
This girl, while she being proactive and working to pay for her schooling, I truly don't think understands the implications of working in the sex industry and her story becoming so highly publicized. She WILL have problems finding work after getting her degree, unless she works in the sex industry in some capacity. In one article I read, she stated that she doesn't want to work for a company who has issues with sex workers. As a society, we are highly sexualized, but not at all sex positive and it's not going to change before she gets her degree.0 -

There may be a correlation between drug abuse and the porn industry to whatever degree, but that's not cause and effect. Drugs are not rampant simply because people (namely women)are working for the porn industry.0 -
I'd beg, borrow, and steal before I'd let my daughter do porn to pay for college.
What if she wanted to do it?
I'd hope that I raised a daughter that didn't want to do that for a living. I don't have any moral issues with porn, or the people that perform. But it's a really seedy world, lots of drugs, self-esteem issues, and just not something I want my kids doing, even if they think they are cool with it at the time.
I am with you 100% Summer. The problem is when they are this age, they do not fully think things through before making life decisions......So we do our best to raise them and hopefully we can guide them.0 -

amateur cam? like a million college girls are already doing?
any joe or jane with a webcam can be a pornstar. and they don't have to have drug or daddy issues.

It shouldn't be seen as her representing the school, but right or wrong, she is. If she is walking around wearing the Duke brand, she chose to be part of that student body, therefore she represents the student body. I'm not saying this is the way it supposed to be, but it is what it is. Universities are shady and if they feel that anything will have a negative impact on them, they won't hesitate to throw her under the bus. Again, this is not right. It's not ok, but it happens. Pornography happens all the time on college campuses....girls gone wild, cameras in the dorm rooms, photos going around facebook. Is it right that she is going to be the center of what is already happening? No, it doesn't make it right at all. She publicly outed herself, then she should hold her head high and not be ashamed of the decisions she has made. I don't believe for a second that Duke would support her if given the choice, and to me that is pretty sad considering she is paying them.0
