The real story here IMO, is how ****ing expensive it is to go to college now.

About 40 grand a year. That doesnt include room & board or "Fees". On a positive note since Duke, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern and Vanderbilt (all comparable schools) are private, their out of state rates are about the same as in state.
So when complete the avg college grad will have no job and about $200 grand in student loans. Well, unless youre a porn star.0 -

I googled her and she sure didn't have a long career. Then again that industry is dying off due to free stuff online. I wonder how anyone at the school found out the harass her about it. The only reason that kid at the local college got caught was the school did some digging to see where he was getting large amounts of cash and outed him for it.
Someone at Duke saw her in a video, and then told all of his fraternity brothers about it, even when she asked him not to spread it around campus. Naturally, everyone else found out soon after. Also, as yet her career isn't over. She has repeatedly said that she still plans to work in porn because she wants to0 -

I think mostly the whole thing is still an issue of society still wanting to control women's sexuality. And when women don't behave as they should it freaks people out. That's what I think it really comes down too.
That's a major part of it. Leftover puritanical nonsense. It's a legal industry, but they're treated like scum and shunned. It'd be one thing if it really were seedy back alley type stuff like in the old days. But it's a billion dollar business now.
People (not all) want to watch, have their fun, and afterwards their feelings of shame pop up so they put that on the people who make it. I think that's pretty rotten.

I have very low if not absolutely no respect for the porn industry and how they treat / depict women

I think that we are debating the morality of porn because that is what is at the crux of needing to "out herself" as a porn star. The fact that sex workers are subjected to such moral judgement during and long after their careers all boils down to the fact that many in society feel that porn is wrong (whether that is because of religious beliefs or some other moral objections). If the stigma was not there, she would not have felt a need to hide how it is that she was earning her tuition money, the teacher who lost her job long after her porn career had ended would still be teaching, etc.

I firmly believe that 17, 18, and 19 year olds don't understand how their actions now will affect them later in life.
Things I didn't understand the consequences of at 17-19:
-The expense of private college education (mine was much cheaper than Duke)
-How stretching my lobes to 5/8 inch wasn't a good idea long term
This girl, while she being proactive and working to pay for her schooling, I truly don't think understands the implications of working in the sex industry and her story becoming so highly publicized. She WILL have problems finding work after getting her degree, unless she works in the sex industry in some capacity. In one article I read, she stated that she doesn't want to work for a company who has issues with sex workers. As a society, we are highly sexualized, but not at all sex positive and it's not going to change before she gets her degree.0 -

There may be a correlation between drug abuse and the porn industry to whatever degree, but that's not cause and effect. Drugs are not rampant simply because people (namely women)are working for the porn industry.0 -
I'd beg, borrow, and steal before I'd let my daughter do porn to pay for college.
What if she wanted to do it?
I'd hope that I raised a daughter that didn't want to do that for a living. I don't have any moral issues with porn, or the people that perform. But it's a really seedy world, lots of drugs, self-esteem issues, and just not something I want my kids doing, even if they think they are cool with it at the time.

It shouldn't be seen as her representing the school, but right or wrong, she is. If she is walking around wearing the Duke brand, she chose to be part of that student body, therefore she represents the student body. I'm not saying this is the way it supposed to be, but it is what it is. Universities are shady and if they feel that anything will have a negative impact on them, they won't hesitate to throw her under the bus. Again, this is not right. It's not ok, but it happens. Pornography happens all the time on college campuses....girls gone wild, cameras in the dorm rooms, photos going around facebook. Is it right that she is going to be the center of what is already happening? No, it doesn't make it right at all. She publicly outed herself, then she should hold her head high and not be ashamed of the decisions she has made. I don't believe for a second that Duke would support her if given the choice, and to me that is pretty sad considering she is paying them.0
