I cannot speak on Slim Fast but it just doesn't seem like a healthy diet. Real food is much better for you. Plus when you get off that diet the weight will probably come back because the old habits will start again. Life style change as far as diet goes is the real key to losing it and keeping it off. Consistent and accurate caloric deficit and you will lose weight. Up and down is normal because water can sometimes add 1-4 lbs to you per day because of sodium, carbs, and activity.

I did the shakes in college, which was like 7-10 years ago. They tasted like dense chalk back then, but I hear they have a new recipe. You can definitely lose weight with the plan, but I don't think you learn how to maintain afterward.

One of the best things about MFP's method of dieting is that you're learning healthy habits that are going to help once you reach your goal and move into maintenance. You get a feel for how to eat and a lot of information about nutrition, moderation, and what's in the foods you love to eat. With Slimfast and products/plans like it people tend to go back to their old eating habits and gain the weight back.

Learning moderation now and how to say no to the second chocolate biscuit will help you in the long term. Sticking to a strict routine won't teach you anything about moderation.

IMO the Slimfast shakes are nasty... ESPECIALLY Strawberry. It's like drinking liquid chalk.

You would do better just eating real food. Get lots of protein, fruits, veggies, then fill in the rest of the day with everything else you want to eat, just keep it to your calorie goal.

Sometimes, when I am in a bind, i'll have a slimfast for breaky, just to get something in my bellay if I am in a rush--i'd rather make my own protien shakes for breakfast though. I couldn't imagine having it for two meals though...I'd probably kill someone.

If you need a starting place to get you in gear - by all means do it. some people desire the structure. I'm not that person.

Be sure you have a plan for after a few days to a week though. I wouldn't do that stuff long term - there's not much way to maintain it long term as I would get pretty tired of it and I struggle with ideas like "healthy lunch" - define healthy?

It's just a way to create a calorie deficit - but it's pretty lackluster after a few days of shakes - so have your plan b ready to go and move into it as soon as the shakes get too blah...

Eventually your office will have a pizza party or somebody will turn up bearing donuts - then what? Denying yourself forever will be hard. I'm not that tough. I've chosen flexibility and progress over perfection and so far so good. I couldn't do it but I wish you well.

Slim Fast is OK, it was ranked 13 by US News and World Reports. There are better options though like the Dash Diet, the TLC Diet, and Weight Watchers.

Just be sure to stay away from the deadly Paleo, Dukan, Raw, or Atkins diets.

    ^^This^^

I had tried a few of the fad diets (including Slim-Fast), but one of two things always happened - I ended up eating more as they were not filling, and/or I gained the weight back on as soon as I was done with it. MFP has given me structure in seeing what I need (aka macros) and I love the feedback and support when I have good days and bad days. This is about changing your life - not a quick-fix.

Slim Fast, like every other "Diet" out there is designed for successful failure. It works, but only in the short term, they know you'll gain the weight back when you go back to normal food, it's how they get repeat customers, which is what business relies on. I assume you're not planning to live on Slim Fast for the rest of your life, so why not just learn healthy habits now so you can have lifelong success?

Oh, and chocolate won't kill you.

    Rigger
  • Thankyou to everyone who commented .. sounds like I just need to be more strict with my self and choose better choices instead of going for the easy option on milkshakes which will result in me probs gaining weight.... xox appreciate the feedback

I like the way they taste; they curb my urge for sweets, so I drink them. That said, I also know how to make healthy, real meals. As long as you know how to properly portion and prepare food without Slim Fast, you'll be fine using them. They're convenient, but sometimes you'll want a nice, home cooked dinner. I wouldn't drink them if I didn't like their taste, though! ;)

I like the taste of Slim Fast - they've come a long way since how they used to taste years ago. I know very well how to prepare healthy meals and have lost weight over the years doing so (to the point where I lost too much weight). I then swung the opposite way - I'm very much a yo-yo eater because I love my food. So I choose to use Slim Fast as I like regimented diets so help me stay on the straight and narrow. Plus, they're convenient for work and I feel like you're having a lot with the 321 plan whereby you've got your 3 snacks as well as your two shakes. I say do whatever works for you. It's fine for people to preach about lifestyle change and eating sensibly but lets face it, we all like our naughty food too much and that is why we're all on here. If you feel it works for you, good luck I say. And you're still putting the thought into preparing a healthy evening meal so it's not as if you're not getting some normal food each day. Perhaps when you're wanting to come off Slim Fast, you could ramp down the days you do it so you're eating normal food for a full day the first week then two days the second week, three days the third etc.

Slim Fast is just good for taking your money. They prey on people like you who think you need a different way out while overcharging you for what is essentially a regular milkshake. Profit is customary in such diets.

Change your attitude as mentioned and you will be fine.

i love the taste but was so hungry on them. i had to stop because my skin became so dry, my forehead felt like it was going to flake off - i know right, nasty. i switched to jason vale juices instead, lost a whole lot more (even though its only day 6) and feel 100% better.
just incase you dont know, you buy the books or 1 book and a juicer and do the juicing yourself.
    best of luck :flowerforyou:
