Forum Myths

Why is it considered impolite to reply to old threads, for example? This isn't spoken communication but written and is sort of timeless. Can you think of any other forum myths that just don't have any basis in reality?

I like to go back about a month or more and find a thread where no one responded and then respond to it.

    Like this thread.

The "above you" threads called. Your services are required there.

1 - Well, when you necro an old post, especially if there's an argument, then you aren't giving everyone who was in that thread the real opportunity to respond, as they likely don't know that it's back or may even be gone.

2 - Most threads are repeats in some way. There's likely a more recent version of that same thread.

3 - If you want to put forth a new idea, it's a lot easier for people to access it as a new thread instead of digging through 15 pages of discussion that happened last year.
  • I think it depends on the forum.

I work as a Forum Manager and our forum rules are to search for an existing topic and post there instead of creating a new thread about the same subject. Less forum clutter that way.

As someone who manages a forum, I'd rather fewer duplicate topics pop up. As a regular member and not moderator/manager, I don't really care how it's done.
