What about when you meet your goals? What then?

Someone asked me how I thought I'd feel when I met my strength and physique goals.

My response was that I'd spend 1/3 the time in the gym to maintain my mass and I'd be able to devote a lot more time to sports since I'd have less training to recover from.

More hockey, golf, swimming, cycling, wakeboarding, etc....

How would you respond?

Why wouldn't you just do the sports now, if that's what you really enjoy?

I'm not really planning on ever meeting my goals. Running has taught me that goals are limitations in disguise. I'm going to work toward my next milestones - and some of them are serious stretch goals...but, if I achieve them before I'm dead, I'll just figure out new ones.

I concur with Varda on two main points: make sure your workouts are ones you love and for runners the possibilities are endless so I will always have a new goal! Good luck with yours!

As a power lifter, with no desire to compete, there is a foreseeable end. I do play sports, but, I could do more if I lifted less.

What would you do if you completed 5 iron mans and ran a few Ultras? Run til you're legs break or change your focus at some point?

My hope is that since I have learned how important portion control is and exercise is not evil, that once I reach my goal (which I don't really have since I intend to sort of stop in August) I hope to still visit the gym 3 - 4 times a week and be active. Right now I am doing the C25K and hope to add some running to my exercise options, I also plan to start back to taking tennis lessons and just overall stay active, walking, biking, hiking.

I was recently invited to go on a hike with my brother and sister in law, something that they never would have taken me on before and during our conversation he was talking about one of their friends and mentioned that they 'were not in shape like us' - that was one of the best non-compliments for me, it really meant a lot being referred to in that context. That is what I hope maintain!

I really don't have goals. since I am only running 5k races, I have a long way til I get to a full marathon. even then, it's not a goal. if I run 10 miles a day and just stay there or just run 4 miles a day which I'm doing now, I'm happy. there is no goal, just the exercise.

Run a faster 10k. Running has infinite possibilities

One of my goals is to do a one armed push-up. No chance of doing that any time soon, but I'm enjoying the process.

I was thinking this ..I will just keep trying to lift more..bulk more, get shredded more ..etc, etc…

IMO when you say "I am done" that invites laziness in and then the calories and weight starts to creep back up and before you know it you have put on 30 pounds and are back to where you started...

Nah, once you get to the shape you like, you're done. Didn't you ever see Conan? He pushed that wheel for awhile and then he just stayed awesome forever.

Depends whether you were still having fun. Not my cup of tea, but for others . . .

Harriet Anderson is the mother of a friend of ours and a local here in our town. She's completed 21 ironmans and holds the record as the oldest women to ever complete it. She did this at 78 this past December. She didn't start doing the ironman until she was already in her fifties!

I did reach my initial goals. Then I set new ones. I will not ever be perfect, but I'm better than I was yesterday. :flowerforyou:
