Is anyone else having trouble working out in the cold?

Why is it that I'm having such a hard time finding the motivation to work out now that it's getting a bit colder? I live in Dallas, TX. The weather has been dropping. In Texas we're not use to the cold at all! I dont know what's wrong with me. I went from jogging on the treadmill for 1 hr 5x a week and doing 2 hrs of Zumba 3x a week, to barely walking on the treadmill 2x a week for 30 min. Sometimes I think I over worked myself and now I'm just burnt out. If this make any sense at all. I have no more motivation to continue. May be I have gotten comfortable with all the compliments and the size that I'm at now?? I still want to lose about 60 lbs.
I'm at 241 and want to be a comfortable 180-ish. I have been on a plateau for about 3 months now. Geesh what should I do? I miss getting all sweaty and feeling that burn,but now I'm lucky If i can jog 1/4 of a mile. A huge set back from 4 months ago when I was jogging 2 miles non stop. Why am I going backwards instead of forward??? Has anyone else been through this?
Not to mention I havent been logging my food for about a month now=[

I think the weather has played a major part in my hiatus, but today I am taking full control of this situation. I am going to the gym and doing two hours of cardio if I don't do anything else tonight.... Good luck getting back on track....I know you can do it!0

Well it sure is a good thing tha you don't live in North Dakota, as I do, because we haven't seen double digit temps, above zero, in weeks now, and next week we will be below zero, all week.
I find working out helps keep me warm and has helped my mood stay a little bit better, this year, because of the good burns I try to get. The worse the weather gets, in previous years, the worse my mood was on a daily basis. Just got to make yourself do it.0 -
Hello Dallas (from Austin). Yes, it's harder when it's cold outside. You just have to make the decision for yourself to get back into it. I was off the wagon for about 2 months, then got back on recently. Just remember how good it felt after one of those long runs. Maybe you should set a realistic goal for yourself and start there. Working out 8 times per week may not be a realistic starting point, so aim for say 3 runs per week and 2 zumbas. Good luck!0

Just get back on the track. I work out indoors. My current workout plan is doing different exercise videos from Netflix or one of the FEW DVDs I have here at home. I am planning on starting P90X as soon as my friend gets me my copies of the DVDs.
It does sound hard, but know that if you need an accountability partner, I'll totally help with that if need be.0 -

I find taking a Vitamin D suppliment really helps me in the winter. With shorter days, it is harder to get Vitamin D from the sun.
On another note, I was thinking of taking a vacation to Texas for warmer weather! I guess it is just what you get used to. It is 12 today in Minnesota.0 -
Wow, I could never live there. Anything lower than 50, I consider as "cold". Must be a texas thing.:frown:0

Yes - i go through the same thing. I seem to want to hibernate in winter. My motivation takes a nose dive.0

I have to admit its a little hard to have sympathy for anyone in TX when I'm getting ready to go walk the dogs for 60 minutes and its below freezing out. HOWEVER - the temp is not the problem and there is no magic motivation fix. If there was we'd all be skinny and this site would be unnecessary. It comes down to this: WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT? If you want really want 180's then you just have to do it. What works for me is not going to work for you. I had to get rid of health problems or have my legs amputated. Now that I've lost most of the weight and feel great - I'm motivated to complete something, finish what I started so I am going to get rid of the last 22 lbs. I'm by no means perfect but I do try every day, every choice I make:
IS THE CHOICE I AM MAKING RIGHT NOW, MOVING ME CLOSER TO OR FURTHER FROM MY GOAL?
The answer isn't always "closer" but at least I'm honest with myself and take full responsibility for the point I'm at.0 -

I, too, live in Iowa. It is cold, and I completely understand the not having motivation. When you aren't used to cold and even when you are, it can put a real damper on your mood. I'd much rather get into my pajamas with my fuzzy socks and a cup of hot chocolate when I get home then put on my workout clothes and hop on the treadmill. What's worked for me was writing it into my planner and treating it like an appointment. I decided to join a gym closer to work so that when I spent the money, I would take more responsibility for my exercise. My husband would kill me if I wasted that money not to go because I was too cozy in my warm house. It definitely gets harder, and there aren't any magic words to fix it, unfortunately. Make goals and reward yourself when you achieve them. Ex. If I run for 30 minutes--I will reward myself with a bubble bath and a good book. Good luck to you! Im having the same issue too im in San Antonio, Tx its prolly not as cold as dallas right now but for texas its cold to me lol. i wake up in the morning n start telling myself its ok not to excersise and the bed is warm n its cold in my house(bc my sis refuses to waste energy on putting the freakin heater on!! reeaaallly come on) n think also ive worked out last week etc etc ugggggghhhh why do i do thid to myself i dont know. then also u have the whole oh tomorrow ill do it thing too surrreee. im gonna get some warm work out clothes n set them right by my bed so as soon as i get up i put those on n get my but going. i might also put the heater on to get it warm all over the house screw my sis im cold n i pay to live comfortably lol. i use a space heater in my room which keeps me in there longer. im making a game plan for tomorrow! this has to get done!! ive been mainting for about 3 weeks already uggghhh i need some loss here. make a game plan and follow it through0

Oh that comment didnt bother me at all. I've lost 71 lbs on my own.( In about 9 months) No gym, personal trainer, no fad diet, or magic pills. I did all my research and got my fat butt up and worked out on my own. ( well with my friend, no professional). And I am damn proud of my self!!!!
But I hate the cold weather. I'm a Texas girl. I'm use to the 100+ degree days. But I think I will join a gym. Maybe I'm tired of my little apartment gym. It only has a few machines. That way since I know I'm paying for it, I will get up and go work out. I hate the idea of wasting money.0 -
The heater in my classroom is not living up to its name: I'm finding myself doing jumping jacks just to get through the period. My students have started bringing sweaters for INSIDE the room....0

I live on the east coast of Canada and it's getting cold here (likely colder than Texas) and yes, I find it hard to get moving. Happens to me every year - the days get shorter, the temperatures drop, and all I want to do is curl up with a blanket. It's really hard to make myself change into workout clothes and get moving, even though I'm exercising indoors. Once you get going though, you warm up and you feel better. I find keeping active is a good way to fight the winter blues. Just try easing your way back into it, once you get going I'm sure you'll feel better.0

spinney i know exactly what you mean I want to go and kick and punch the bag in the garage which I sort of consider to be my make-shift gym but I can't because of the cold weather. So I've been improvising by walking/jogging in place or HIIT(sprinting/jogging in place), using the stairs, only done that once so far but it was fun. I do a bodyweight workout 3x a week. I bought a pedometer yesterday and I actually walked part of the way home in the rain just to up my step count. Sad I know.0
