Question for nutrition experts: Grains, good or bad?

I know many people will have their "google search theories" as well as "diet based biases" on this subject but the question is really centered around the findings of controlled medical research specific to impact of grains in the human body such as inflammation, fat inducing, insulin impact, etc... Not in scope for this question are grain fed animals and the subsequent impact to the human body when those animals are consumed. If you have links, book titles, or other scientific evidence I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you in advance. Ernie.

Nutrition experts on MFP? Where?!0

Do you have some links for me to read?
Some interesting reading......not specifically to your question though. The 1st link has a section on grains specifically with links to the research.

Nutrition experts on MFP? I gotta see that!

Evidence that points that grains are not bad? You can't prove a negative, so...
Will you settle for a little deductive reasoning? Humans have been eating grains for hundreds of thousands of years. If grains were 'toxic' in any way, I think we wouldn't have been doing so well as a species.0 -

You will get so many different opinions, "facts", views, inputs, etc on this board....not even worth the argument0

Everything's toxic/poisonous - it's just a question of dosage!0 -
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.bc- if you do a pubmed search with the terms "review" and "grain" some really interesting articles pop up, related to diabetes, and refined grains in diets. I suggest you play around here for a bit.0

For the vast majority of people, eating grains comes with no negative health repercussions of any kind.
Which is as one would expect, since we've been eating them for hundreds of thousands of years.0 -
If you do a search on scholar.google.com, you can find links to (at least) the abstracts of scientific studies or textbooks. If you luck out, you can find the full article for free somewhere.0

Filtering out crap is pretty easy. thanks though, you're right! There will "always" be a few that provide useful input which makes it worth it.0 -

that's a great idea. Thank you so much.0 -
I'm not a nutrition expert, but I eat grains! I think we just don't prepare them properly. For example, wheat bread should be properly fermented in a yeast bread. Or sprouted. Or toasted. These processes make the grain more digestible, and in the case of fermenting, also makes them more nutritious (complete protein, more vitamins).
I am NOT into the idea that we should not eat grains or sugars. Nonsense.0 -
Here's an expert dietitian's response to one anti-grain advocate:

Agree completely with this. Over indulging in anything can be unhealthy. You can even kill yourself by drinking too much water. It's all about proper perspective and portions.0 -
Humans have been eating grains for a long time, but they're not the same grains that we're eating today. A great place to buy a grain that less people are sensitive to: http://www.sunriseflourmill.com/turkey-red-a-heritage-wheat/0

Lots of valid points so far:
1) It is not likely to get a true expert here on MFP
2) Any and Everything can be bad given the portion size
3) Doesnt hurt to share knowledge (the good intention kind, not the smart *kitten* comments often posted that offer no help to anyone)...so on that note...
I am no expert, but have come to believe certain types of grains are a great balance to the overall diet, and should be incorporated in controlled amounts, when consumed from unprocessed sources.
Let me know if you find out any info on the questions you've posted. Its an interesting topic!0 -

I prefer my sprouted fermented grains in craft beer :drinker: :drinker: :drinker:0 -

Thank you, I appreciate the input. I've done a bit of studying on sprouted grains.0 -

The fermenting I am referring to is the fermentation by yeast that occurs when you are making a loaf of WHOLE wheat bread. If it is allowed to rise (proof, ferment) for an adequate amount of time, the minerals in the grain are made bio-available, there's a full complement of b-vitamins (including pantothenic acid, an anti-aging b-vitamin), and is a complete protein.0 -

We are doing well as a species???
I think not. There are higher rates of cancers, tumors and the whole world is becoming obese(except third world countries that hoard their food from the poor)0 -

Hi, first of all, thank you for the post and congratulations on your weight loss goals. Question: Are you able to provide a link or information that confirms, scientifically, that humans have been consuming grains for 100's of thousands of years? I would be very interested in that study for sure. Thank you.
edited for spelling errors (lol, there may be more)0 -
I am reading the metabolic typing diet and it makes tons of sense. Basically some people do well on grains and some people don't.
Basically, we now can't eat meat, fruit is "fattening" and grains are bad for you.
That leaves veggies people. Veggies. I will die of diet boredom. :laugh:0
