"For A Big Guy"
Today I am at the gym, I just got off the treadmill, could barely catch my breath, and I thought I might actually die.
One of the gym regulars, who I have talked to a few times, comes up to me and says:
"For a big guy, you sure do push yourself in here, and I'm impressed with how much you run on the treadmill, keep it up"
According to the many threads I have seen on MFP, I should be upset..
HOW DARE HE CALL ME A BIG GUY!!! WTF does me mean by that??!?!?
But I am not, I am ecstatic. In between breaths and not dying I said "Thanks Man, that means a lot to me"
My only point is that if we spent less time trying to find something to be offended about, and more time actually LISTENING to what people are trying to tell you, we would be a lot better off.

That's actually what motivated me to start working out. "Hey big buy, can you help me?" Heard it three times on the same day. Went home, put on my running shoes and haven't looked back since starting this...looks around..."journey" over five years ago.0

Bravo, Ty. On the workout, on your determination, and on being able to accept the sincere admiration of others with straightforward confidence.0

When I took my shirt off at my physical, my doctor said I was in "amazingly good shape for a 44 year old". .
I was overjoyed.0 -

When I was in training the instructors called me big guy... because I am a big guy. There is nothing wrong with that statement. There are a lot of people who get butthurt and throw temper tantrums like a little kid so people will coddle them. I am glad you are not one of those people.0 -

I'm always going to be a big guy...My goal weight is 230-240lbs...Because I know how I can look when I weigh that, and I'm fine with that.0 -
I went from 471 to 279 in just over 8 months and cannot tell you how I LOATHE being called "big guy." If it is acceptable, can i, in turn, refer to pthers I see on the street as "Effeminate guy," "Short guy," "Whipped guy," "Black guy," etc? It is an accepted form of prejudice but it is just that... prejudice. The fact someone pointed out the difference in physiology instead of recognizing you as a fellow gym dude is insulting, but you handled it better than I would have. I would have tickled his spotter when he was heavy lifting. Ha.0

Well... I feel like weight is different. Should a thin girl get upset when someone says, "For a small girl you sure do eat a lot!"0 -

If it offends her, then yes. If not, then no. Interestingly enough though, to tease someone about being skinny, which is also wrong, is often considered a compliment. Weight is NOT different as many do not have a choice. At my heaviest, I worked 2 jobs, putting in up to 16 hours and was always on my feet, avoided carbohydrates and ate primarily leaner cuts of protein, avoided juices and opted for fruit once in awhile, ate veggies with meals (dark leafy greens) and could only lose like 20 lbs, so I went for surgery after battling size for 20+ years and realizing I could not do it with a gym membership and sensible diet. I had those things.0 -
That's a great attitude...for a big guy.0

I'm 6'4 & 235lbs...I'm still referred to as "big guy". I found that I was just too damn sensitive. Once you reduce and start packing on muscle....being called big guy is actually a compliment. Stop it with the butt hurt.
Take it from me,
