Shin Splits...

... I have them.

1. How fast do they heal?
2. How can I prevent them for future references?
3. What exercises should I do for now?

The main 2 causes of shin splints are a)incorrect footwear for your running style and b) too much too soon

If its a), go and get your running style analysed and some decent new trainers, its worth investing.

If its b) take it easy

I don't like to rest completely when mine flare up so I use KT tape to help support them, definitely notice a difference. Are yours down the front or side? Mine are on the inside of my shin. Theres some good online videos and diagrams showing you how to tape up properly.

    Hope this helps :)

calf compression sleeves can help. sometimes i use them during the run but mostly after during cool down. they also halep with shin splints.

I didn't get them this time when I started running. I started slow, walking a lot and then run a little. now I can run 4 miles without shin splints.

Do you think they are more supportive than full leg compression leggings?

    1) Healing time is different for everyone it could be a couple of weeks to a couple months.
    2) To prevent a reoccurrence make sure you have the proper footwear. A good running store will help with choosing the correct shoe based on your running style (eg. do you pronate etc.). Don't do too much to soon. It's recommended that you should increase your distance by no more than 10% a week.
    3) For now ice, rest and try different cardio exercise like biking or water running that won't put any stress on your shins.
