the 5:2 Diet/The Fast Diet

Hey MFP's!

I am trying this diet called the 5:2 diet which a few family members have been attempting for a few months now, one has lost 21 pounds since Thanksgiving, and the other lost 10 pounds over the course of four months. Of course the one who lost 21 pounds exercises and is always careful with what she eats though.

I recently started and this is my first week, my first day went pretty well. I started at 10PM the night before and fasted until 10PM the following day. I am doing the 24 hour fast as of now, not the 36 yet. I wanted to see how I would do first

For those of you who do not know what it is, it is a form of intermittent fasting, where you chose whichever two days of the week you wish (aslong as they are not in a row) to eat 500 calories (600 if you're a male) and on the other days you can eat freely and within boundaries. You chose a day in which you know you will be busy all day to do this so you can successfully fast.

So, I was wondering from those of you who have attempted it have seen results and if so, what we your results? Do you guys like the diet?

There is a group somewhere on this website for people who do this. However, I find just eating within a set calorie limit everyday is easier. As long as your weigh everything you should get an accurate calorie count. Just go with a reasonable deficit that you can find sustainable.
  • I've actually decide to try it too! I was told that you should at least try it for a month, just in case your progress is slow. No offense to Sunshine2plus, but don't listen to her. I think she's referring to starvation mode (http://www.aworkoutroutine.com/starvation-mode/ covers this entire idea properly). But the 5:2 diet is a form of intermittent fasting and has lots of health benefits.

Try it out and do it. The worst that can happen is that you don't like it and move on to something else!

    Sure it's going to work.

If you really eat at maintenance on the 5 days, mindful eating, no pigging out, don't even worry about logging, those 2 days with 500 calories creates about a 21% deficit to your weekly total.

That's right in the range of healthy deficit, though a tad high if down to last 10 lbs.

Watch your workouts carefully, if you find problems, increase the fasting day calories.
