Hey guys,
I was wondering what all the other lactose intolerant people do? I am pretty much off all dairy or it gives me too much trouble. I drink silk soymilk and take two viactiv chews a day. How do you all compensate? I was wondering if you had any other ideas for calcium and such. Surprisingly enough, I do not like cheese but ice cream is a killer!
Just curious

I am Lactose also, and I drink the Silk Soy and then I take 1/2 a calcium that is coral based. Other than that I don't worry to much about it, Defiantly stay away from cheese and ice cream, I had a bone density test last year and everything is still fine. I have a test done about every 5 years.0

I have been lactose intolerant as long as I can remember. I put a little bit of skim milk in my coffee, and can eat some cheese. I can not eat ice cream, cottage cheese, chip dips, etc. I have used rice dream, soy products, etc. I have problems with soy as well, so don't do soy - rice dream is expensive and I don't like it as well. I have also used lactaid and lactose free milk. Breyers now has lactose free ice cream too, but it isn't available everywhere.

Breyer's makes a lactose-free vanilla ice cream. I also enjoy Lactaid milk. These foods with the lactase enzyme incorporated in them provide much better results than taking a lactase supplement alongside a meal. Give them a try, you won't be sorry!0

Pick me!
I am one of those naughty lactose intolerant people that cuts out all milk.. but not all milk products!
I eat alot of yogurt, but I take it with the lactase enzyme supplements. sometimes it helps...sometimes not
As far as calcium goes, I just take a calcium supplement once a day and so far seem to be just fine0 -
I'm allergic to milk entirely, but I seem to get plenty of nutrients from almond milk, soymilk (rarely drink that since almond milk is yummier), and regular nutritious foods. A supplement is sometimes needed, but there are a lot of foods that have calcium and vitamin D and I haven't had any problems with any vitamin deficiencies since I eliminated all milk products.
Also, these are not particularly healthy, but if you really need an ice cream treat, Tofutti makes delicious non-dairy ice cream products. Tofutti Cuties are little ice cream sandwiches that taste very similar to real ones, and the Tofutti Truly Yours cones are literally like eating heaven. Just make sure you can work them into your calorie budget. If you have a Sunflower Market in your area, they probably carry the Tofutti brand.0 -
We buy lactaid (or off brand). Husband is super lactose intolerant and this doesn't give him any issues.0

I'm not lactose intolerant, but my husband is. And we do the lactaid stuff too. However I don't drink milk EVER!
I DO NOT like milk or dairy of any kind, except ice cream on occasion. I don't like yogurt, or cold cheese, or nacho cheese, or cheese of any kind unless it is shredded and/or melted on a baked potato. I don't drink any kind of milk almond, silk or any at all with cereal or on its own... I looked at my calcium values over the past month... most of the time its under 50%... I suppose I should start taking a calcium supplement.0 -
Hmmm...definitely going to give the almond milk a try!! Thanks!0

I can't say I've heard of a Sunflower Market, but I am definitely going to look for something similar! Thanks!0
