abliebowitz, the important thing is to increase your activity as you are able. There are lots of us here at different levels, and we each set our own challenges for ourselves.
I'm a numbers person, so I love knowing what number I got to yesterday, what number I'm at whenever I want to check the Fitbit. If I see a number that's 700 and something or higher, I will probably leap up and get to the next thousand on principle. Since getting the Fitbit, I've started walking while brushing my teeth, walking while my tea steeps, walking in a figure eight or marching in place while watching movies, and so on and so forth. (I don't do that every time, either, and I also legitimately go on "actual" walks more frequently, too, lol.) I take missing my express bus and needing to walk the 15 minutes to my house as a good opportunity rather than simply an annoyance. I walk to the bus stop, walk at the bus stop while waiting for the bus, and then walk from the bus stop to work. I take the long way to meetings. I walk while eating lunch and snacks at work. (It took my coworkers a little while to get used to it, but they're mostly resigned now.) If I'm talking on the phone, I'm pacing. (Less at work, where I'm attached to a cord, but most of the time that I'm on my cellphone.)
Basically, I try to sneak steps in any way that I can, and I make a conscious effort to be more active and not to sit for too long in a row. I'm also actively exercising and incorporating walking-based work into my day, too. (You don't want to know how early I get up, lol.)
My mom got a Fitbit for Christmas (prompting me to ask for one for my birthday in January), and she's using hers a little more casually than I am, but still as a tool to be mindful of movement. Three co-workers now have Fitbits as well.
My mom and I both find that at a fairly casual pace, 10 minutes = 1000 steps (more or less, obviously depends on your speed, height, and stride). So manage that just 10 times a day, and you've got your 10000 steps. Can you take a five-minute walk every hour? Walk on your lunch break? Walk to see a colleague instead of calling or e-mailing them? Park further away? Opportunities to walk are always around you if you look for them!

ABLIEBOWITZ: I use an Omron Pedometer and it goes everywhere with me. I took it to Europe with me on
vacation and almost lost it but got it returned. What are the odds. :noway: Good luck on your

A few years ago I noticed that I wasted a lot of time in the evening, so bit by bit, I started going to bed earlier and getting up earlier and walking in the morning.....the earlier I get up, the more I can walk in the morning before I have to shower and dress for classes and meetings that I attend. I keep my walking clothes in a designated place so I can find them in the dark and carry them into the bathroom and dress. I walk every day with no exceptions for weather or fatigue or laziness. Beyond that, I seek every opportunity to be walking and do not worry that people think I'm strange.

ps. - when I empty the dishwasher I take one thing out at a time and put it away so I can add to my steps.
Taking clothes in from the line is the same, a few at a time , put them away and then go back for more.
Walk and talk while on the phone.
I park in the car park as far away from the store as possible ( my husband laughs at this and says I might as well leave the car at home) and I walk up and down every aisle even if I don't need to.
If I follow the black line on the floor in our local shopping centre I will have covered 1km.
When I put on the kettle to boil I walk around the island bench in the kitchen - but only if there is no one looking.:embarassed:0 -
