The Amazing Dress Size Calculator is a big fat liar.

Why is this website still even online?

http://clairehunter.com/dress-size-calculator.htm

I just entered my latest measurements into it, and, depending on what "they" consider the "bust" measurement to be (is it along the fullest part of the breasts, or along the ribcage directly below the breasts?), I'm either in a size 18 (uh, no, that's what I started here at) or a size 12 (uh, no, because the size 9's that I JUST bought are starting to fall off of me.

WTH???

Guess I'm wondering why it is important to you. You have done an amazing job losing 60 lbs. and wearing a size 9 that is falling off of you. You are doing an awesome job - worrying about someone's "projection" of what dress size you "might" wear seems like a waste to me. My advice, CELEBRATE YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT - BECAUSE YOU ARE AWESOME!!!

Look at it from the bright side... It could be worse. The sizes it tells you could be sizes that don't fit because they're too small instead of what it reports now which is apparently too big
  • ...

It's not "importan"t to me. I was trying to find out what size I should be in, since the clothes I'm wearing are obviously too big, and this thing is one of the first websites that come up when you type in, "What dress size am I?" and it's all wrong. Not just for me, but for everyone who goes there.

    I find it annoying.
  • I think "bust" is around the fullest part of the chest. But, like everyone else has said, you have lost 60lbs!!! Amazing! And, a size 9 is a junior's size, so in a "womans" size it is more like a size 6. I wear a size 7 in juniors and a size 4 in womans...if that helps.
  • Ha!, and either I am a size 8 if I put in 36" bust, or a 2 if I put in a 34" one (I am right in between). I think there is a big difference between a 2 and an 8!!! I wonder if that is based on an actual tailor's measurement guide, and since vanity sizing is rampant, it might be correct. It is funny, because back in the day, a size 14 was about a modern day 6 (Marilyn Monroe wore this size-everyone always thinks she was so "big" but, she was curvy and petite). I think sewing and tailoring patterns (I am not a sewer, obviously  ) are more realistic. I think we like to see small numbers on our clothing because it makes us feel good...it would be nice if we all could have hand tailored clothing, and never know the actual size on the garments  JMHO

I am currently in a size 12 and they are loose on me. Not ready to go to a 10 yet but the 12 is loose and these websites say that I am in a 18. I closed the site and laughed because I KNOW that a size 18 no matter what the company would fall off of me. I don't worry about what websites say. I worry about what fits. =)

Its coming up right for me, a uk 10-12

Silly question maybe but are you measuring the right part of your waist as that would be the biggest difference
  • "Ivy" size 18? Ya right... I should call the owner of that website and sell them my "Ocean front property in Arizona" LOL
  • LOL Yeahhh I knew it was way off.

Delicate, maybe the person who programmed it was from the UK and didn't know the proper sizing for US.

Everything that I've read says that to measure the natural waist, measure at the smallest point. That's where I'm measuring....

I put in my measurements and it was pretty accurate for me! I guess it just depends on the person.

It does say for tailored clothes I would be in a size 4-6. Size 6's are usually pretty big on me for mainstream brands...GAP, OLD NAVY, some of the stuff MACY's carries.

In designer clothes I am very very much a size 6 dress size. They usually cut much smaller than mainstream brands. ALSO, they are talking about DRESS size. If you go into a formal dress department that sells tailored dresses (aka ones with zippers and zero stretch material) this might be the correct size for you. Who knows though!

I know I am definately a size bigger in tailored dresses than I am in work pants or jeans.

    good job on your loss.

Dress sizes in general suck because it takes your largest measurement, and that's t your size.
It's like shopping for a wedding dress. you get the size to fit your biggest asset & then get it altered down.

The Amazing Dress Size Calculator is accurate. Dress sizes aren't meant to be perfect as generally speaking, most people will have to tailor as their measurements aren't the 'golden mannequin proportion' or whatever.

Example, I'm a 40-32-40. Says I should wear either a 14 or a 12. If I wear a 14, I would have to squeeze my waist in by .5 inches, and tailor down dem hips by 2.5 inches. If I wear a 12, I'd fit the hips but I would squeeze my bust and waist quite a bit.

So that pretty much means that if I were looking for dresses, opt for the 14 and tailor down. If I'm looking for tops, get a 14, and for pants get a 12.

Perhaps if it says you're an 18 and a 9, some parts of your body are different sizes? Also keep in mind that there is a good portion of companies who vanity size. One or two sizes smaller with typical dishonest clothing will be normal, but it isn't necessarily bad. We're just too used to getting the smaller numbers drilled into our heads.

I think it's pretty accurate for me, but it really doesn't matter much because of all the vanity sizing done in the industry. Sizing can go up or down several sizes all depending on what brand you're wearing. :)
