RANT: I feel like such an idiot!

Basically, I always wondered why I have stuck at the same weight for 3.5 years. I always thought 'I don't eat much' - how could I be so stupid?! Today, I ate like a pig! Over 1000 calories over, even though I earned nearly 1000 through exercise. Well luckily this hasn't discouraged me, it's motivated me. I bought a hula hoop and some sort of thing for toning inner thigh, outa thigh and arms. I am going to get all my other exercise thingy m'jigs out the cupboard and crack this before I end up heavier!

Not really a rant in the end. I'm a secret eater and now I know it. Boy do I feel stupid!

Most people will tell you that the best way to really take control of your eating habits is to log. Be as accurate as you can possibly be. Buy a digital food scale. Be accountable. LOG ALL TEH THINGS! Don't be ashamed, just take a look at the pattern that develops and then come up with a plan of attack.

You've got the right idea! Be sure to check out other resources, change up your workouts, keep it interesting! Pinterest and YouTube, as well as other websites like bodyrock.tv, Greatist, HASFit, Nerd Fitness, etc. can be an invaluable source of inspiration and information!

You'll get a lot farther by logging your food and meeting your calorie goal.

Nothing ever worked for me until I started measuring/weighing my foods and logging it. Log and find activities that you enjoy!

Then you really didn't eat 1000 calories over, did you.

Your daily goal already has a deficit in it, if doing MFP method, for non-exercise days.

    I'm betting 1000 calorie deficit.

Meaning you could eat 1000 over your daily goal, and just be eating at maintenance if you did no exercise.

The fact you did exercise, and think you burned 1000 calories, means you still have a deficit of 1000 calories.

I know I'm assuming you selected 2 lb weight loss goal. I'm also assuming you try to come in under your eating goal by decent amount. Thinking bigger is better.
I know I'm also assuming you like the extra deficit that exercise creates, so when MFP says "in 5 weeks you'll weigh....", it encourages you to do it again.

If my assumptions are right, and you've been doing similar for 3.5 years, then you might want to read up on what you likely did to yourself to cause that.

And yes, those little pig-out parties don't help in that case, just packs on the fat because your body wants some protection in case the craziness continues.

Ah, you're like me!!! :) I still find myself reluctant to add something to the log, because of how I think others will perceive me, but so far I haven't given in. My log is open to anyone, so any of you can see all the fast food, the bad choices. While I cringe at the thought of others looking at it, it also gives me even more incentive to watch what I'm eating. The temptation is there not to log everything, but if I'm going to do this, I have to be honest first with myself. :) Good luck with your journey!

if having your diary set to public is encouraging you to not log accurately, then...

    1) close your log to the public
    2) start logging accurately

nobody is here to judge you and calorie counting doesn't work if you're not honest and accurate. if one of your friends is judging you on what you're eating (and i don't mean somebody who is legitimately worried that you are not eating enough calories), then delete them.

the people who will "tsk tsk" you for logging ice cream or potato chips are full of crap and DO NOT know what they are talking about. all that matters are your calories and macros and micros. which foods you eat to meet those goals is 100% irrelevant.

I didn't say that having people see it caused me to log incorrectly. I said the temptation is there, but I've been honest thus far. :)

if you have exercised 1,000 calories and eaten them back then in no way have you 'over eaten'.

I am set to lose 0.5-1lb a week. I try to eat to or just over my goal. I haven't been doing it for 3.5 years but I have maintained for that long. Thanks though.

I think I must of wrote this confusingly. My goal is 1600. I earned 1000 through exercise. So I should of eaten 2600. I actually ate 3600. *cringe*

Logging is great isn't it? If you hadn't been logging you'd never even realize you'd done it. :flowerforyou:

That's the spirit. It's so easy for boredom snacks to add up when you're not paying attention. I think we've all been there. (Ask me about my frustrating old job and the dried fruit in my desk. Nutritious, yes, but way more caloric than I realized.) Now you know what you need to watch, which is a step in the right direction.
