So I am a stable hand. I work 8-5. First 30 mins is feeding horses grain in their stalls and throwing a a flake or two of hay over the fence into 5 pastures followed by turning out 6 horses.. Then I spend 2 1/2 - 3 hours mucking stalls. Average 18 mins/stall if I dont have to add shavings. When the stalls are done I sweep or use the leaf blower to sweep the center isle and go to lunch. When I get back I turn out another horse and the spend 20-30 mins hand walking a horse before letting him graze. Then I either drag the arena with the tractor, throw and stack hay, pickbup yard debris (moved across property by tractor), pick up manure from the fields or some other maintenance type chore. Then I get to bring every one back in before feeding and a final sweep. I dont get out of breath and I dont feel like my heart rate really goes up much. ..so active? Very active? Slightly active b/c of the heart rate and breath thing? Would love some opinions... thanks

as a stable hand do you really have to ask????
My husbands family has a horse farm...I've done all that work too and yes after doing it for months you would get "used" to it and our heart rate might not go as high as it did at first
But if I were you I would put very active...mucking out stalls in itself is physically demanding work...never mind throwing the hay, walking them to the pasture,
My father in law does a lot of that work and has for 40 years and he is thin and eats whatever he wants...keep in mind the rest of his family is not "thin"...meaning his brothers etc.
ETA: this is my opinion based on first hand knowledge...0 -
Yeah, I was really asking *sheepish grin*. It gives me like 2600 cal on very active which seems like a lot. Before I worked in retail and got around 1700 so I wanted to make sure I wasnt giving myself too much credit. So far my budget doesnt allow for a fitbit or any thing like that yet, but I plan on getting one. Thanks0
