I use a Polar H7, if you have an iPhone 4S (or later), or an Android phone, you can record everything with the Polar Beat app, and sync your progress to Polar Flow and Polar Personal Trainer online. I find this is a really good way to keep track of progress and analyse your workouts afterward.

I found the H7 for a lot cheaper on Amazon, and the H6 is slightly cheaper if you're not fussed about it transmitting to watches or gym equipment.

    I promise I don't work for them!

I use the Mio Alpha ...it's the only HRM that doesn't require a chest strap..simply a watch on your wrist... and I love it.. I pair it with Digifit and it automatically exports workout data into my fitness pal.

I've got the FT7. It's a great motivator and I love to track my heart rate and calorie burn, but the chest straps get flaky after awhile. I've had the HRM 18 months, the original chest strap went bad after 3 months. I recommend the ones with the sensor built in (not the separate piece that snaps on). Even with that, the one replacement I've got is starting to "stick" (stay at the same rate for way too long, then suddenly drop). And that's with the use of electrode gel. Darn straps are $50 to replace, too.
