lost 8kgs (nearly 18lbs) in two&half months by walking

Hi, I'm 5'3 and half (163 cms) female. I joined MFP today to share my weight loss story. On jan 1st 2014, I weighed around 70 kgs (154.3 lbs), My new year's resolution was to walk casually without hurting my knees and back as I got bad knees & terrible backache from constant bus journeys.I used to travel 130 kms = 80.6 miles (up & down) everyday by bus to study at a local university.

How I did it??
All I did was walk for 2-3 hours/day , 5-6 times a week talking on phone with my girl pal (remember I was walking so casually that I was able to make conversation freely). My maximum walking speed was 2miles/hr as I didnt want to hurt my back & knees. I did not change my diet at all.
1. I had 150g oats with whole milk & 3-4tsp of sugar for breakfast (had it between 8am - 9am)
2. 200g - 250g of white rice with 3-4 fish (thick wide) fillets for lunch (had it between 1pm - 3pm)
3. 150g of wheat pasta for dinner. (had it between 8pm - 10pm)
4. snacks : orange/sweet potato/water melon slice/cookies/cake/candy bar ( I suggest you all to make healthy choices).

Remember my diet mostly consisted of cereal grains (white rice, oats, wheat) yet I lost weight.. I know I made unhealthy choices with food as I was just eating what I was being fed (since I'm a college student who doesn't have time to plan or cook my own meals). I suggest you all to make healthy food choices & you might lose more weight than what I did. I also drank 3 litres of water everyday.I ocassionally munched on choco cookies, cakes, icecreams & even restaurant food. I ate out weekly once with my girl pals (this was my mistake as we ate lot of pizzas & bad junk food & i still regret about it)

Internet suggested me to run / jog / lift weights / jump / hit gym etc but my determination level was way too low to do all that plus running & jumping are bad for knees. I dont get time to hit gym as I got heavy college homework. So I sticked to casual normal pace walking.

By jan 31st , I lost 3kgs, remaining 5kgs I lost in one and half months. I weighed myself on March 15th 2014 & I was 62 kgs (136.6 lbs). therefore I lost 8kgs = 17.7lbs.

My goal weight is 50kgs (110lbs) & I'll continue with my walking. I'll try to make some dietary changes(no guarantees though). I'll write again after I'll reach my goal. Hope I inspired you. I wish you all success.
I need some inspiration too as I have to reach my goal. All my life I was never in 50s, my lowest recorded weight was 59kgs when I was 21.

My conclusion : Just walking can help you lose weight , though it's a time taking process , It's still worth it without any side effects.

I agree, walk for a better living. As to food choices, whatever that makes you happy go for it. Why eat healthier if it makes you sadder and depressed in the end? You are doing well anyway. So good luck!

  • You have time for a 2/3 hour walk, but not an hour gym session?

gym is too far from where i live.. it'll take me an hour to get there !! besides I get so tired from travelling everyday that my energy level is zero, so i find walking amusing rather than vigorous gym workouts. plus while walking i get to talk to my bestie on phone. I dont even have to change into something comfortable where as gym requires special clothing.

Walking is great, you can really clear out your head and I do know people who have lost a lot of weight primarily by walking. Good for you for not making your back and knees worse.

I can't wait for it to warm up here.

You go girl!!! That is amazing effort!
  • That's very inspiring !! We have the same weight goal (50kg)! I'm 161 cm for 54 kg and I'm struggling to lose these last 4kg ^^ So hard ! And I'm going to the gym every day in addition to my volleyball training and ballet class so I really don't know what to do ! I guess I'll try your strategy and walk more!! :D

GYM is any-day better but we all should appreciate her efforts. Walking is also a great exercise and not too taxing on joints like running or HIIT. She will detoxify her body with improved blood and lymph circulation resulting in glow on skin, improved cardiovascular health and weight loss.

Its a great start and will speed up her body metabolism, and later she can join gym. These tiny baby steps are better for longevity instead of joining gym with new found enthusiasm and later giving up.
