Hello everyone!
Just got laid off from my position last week and although I kinda saw it coming it was a total shock to me. So this is my first week when I decided to do nothing. This will be my vacation week since I haven't taken any in three years. BUT, an anxiety also kicked in (I guess dealing with change does it) and I find it really hard to resist temptation to booze excessively. :drinker:
I'm pretty sure there are some people MFP out there who went through this before. What would be the best way in your opinion to deal with this temporary situation so I don't turn in to a grease ball from excessive boozing? I would love to hear some suggestions!

booze gets expensive- don't get into that. for a variety of reasons.
I'd take some time.... take this week to cleanup do research - re-*kitten*- reconnect- start reaching out to people.
Apply for un-employment as soon as you can if you qualify.
brush up your resume- start reaching out for references and referrals.
after a few days of that- start firing out resumes where ever you can.
I would set up a schedule- scan the search engines/job sites every other day or every 2 days. It gets exhausting- new jobs don't pop up every day- so you get more frustrated- i'ts easy to obesse and lose hope.
Plan Monday- Wed- Friday and set a time of day to do it.
Also keep working out- it's a great time to hammer workouts!!!
Pick up a hobby that's relatively easy to maintain- time consuming and not super expensive (my art became a big thing for me)
sorry about the loss- that's hard- keep pressing forward- and even if you get a delivery job doing pizza's or whatever doing SOME work is better than NO work!0 -
Thanks JTE! It calms the anxiety though. Can't exercise when I have anxiety. Tomorrow will try not to booze. Is there anything I could take? Like some herbal or homeopathic preparation? It's REALLY bad.0

When I was laid off, I went for runs and walks all of the friggen time and played video games. As much as I love drinking, I know it does no good for me. Bad outweighs the good for my body, knawmsayin0

Thanks JoRocka... Great advice. I'm going to get a board tomorrow to write my plan of action on and put it in my kitchen. I need stuff to be written down or I'll loose the track of it...0

You have a full time job now. Its to get your resume in order and apply for jobs. Doing this 40 hours a week will make you tired enough to sleep good at night and you will feel good about yourself for your efforts.
Lots of people have lost their jobs but found a better one because of it.. The more effort you put into finding a new job the faster you will be employed again.
Get in some fun recreation during your spare time. And don't forget to take care of you by eating well.
For sure lay off the booze. It only adds empty calories, is expensive and adds to depression. It really is the LAST thing you need.

I am home on a medical leave for 7 months now and offer the following: Make a list of ALL those things you have said "I wish I ahd time to..." and then DO THEM!!! Read more, catch up on a series, walk, blog, cook, volunteer a few hours if you can, get involved i community, run errands for people you love, visit friends and family, and ALL that good stuff.0

Sorryto hear your news, But treat it as a change of job. your new job is finding new employment. I set myself a target of 20 applications per day and collected loads of addresses, reapply after 3 months. Only 1 company kept my details that long.

Maybe workout some more. Right after being active I loose the desire to drink.
If you're on the hunt for a job I suggest taking a look at Askamanager.com. She has tons of good advice on finding a job..lots of good info on resumes, cover letters and interviewing. It definitely has helped both me and my husband.0 -

When I got laid off I think I spent a week boozing it up too.. it was my vacation week like you had.. then I got back into the job hunt.. unfortunately it was during the worst of the recession so it took much longer to find something... basically played video games, went to the gym, cooked dinners, and if I felt like it had some drinks.. but I always tried to make it so I woke up around 8 or 9 am and looked for jobs that day. (took like 7 months)..
And yes apply for unemployment right when available.. you don't pay into it not to use it.0 -
Hi Greenrun... That will be my next step. Unemployment. I'll try to find something first so at least I can say I'm actively looking. But this pesky anxiety... I hate it!0

I didn't realize you had anxiety, I suffer from it too. Sometimes I'm afraid to walk into businesses because I'm not sure if I'm going into the right place. Does that make sense? Can you apply to jobs near you? I would go for a walk with all of my resumes and go business to business until I found something. Maybe you could pop by a tea store/health food store and shop in their tea isle? There's a million different teas that have a million different benefits, chamomile is the best to calm you, but I also think it makes you sleepy. I'm not 100%. Also try green tea, you probably know of that already lol. All the best to you.0
