hello,
is it ok to eat celery when on a ketogenic diet? I know you must keep carbs under 30g, but is celery ok to eat because they say you must eat about 70% fat...and celery has like zero fat and 2 sticks of celery has 10 calories (I bought it from Tesco)....celery is low carb, but its not high in fat, so is that ok to eat or will I not go into ketosis?

Ketosis main thing is the carbs. If celery is low in carbs it should be fine to eat it. Not really something that would be on the top of my list for veggies though. Why did you choose celery? Also if you eat meat eggs, beef, chicken, sausages, turkey, and cheeses are all great on a ketogenic diet. Im two weeks into a low carb diet. Fat I dont think is as important. Only thing eating fat does I beleive is makes you feel fuller for longer.0

the reason I chose celery because its low in calories, 2 sticks has 10 calories, and it's (I think) a negative calorie food, takes more calories to eat it than it has in it....
thanks for the advice, I thought fat was a big factor in it, so its just the carbs that I need to cut, cheers!0 -
Carbs are 4 calories per gram. Even if celery was 100% pure sugar carbs if its only 10 calories then it is only 2.5g carbs. You'd have to eat a lot of celery to hit 30g. My guess though is that the reason it is so calorie low is a lot of the bulk of celery is just fiber and the rest is water. Not much to celery really.0

You might do better though switching that celery for something like a cup of green beans that is about 5 grams of carbs, or even eating romaine lettuce. 1 cup is 5 grams of carbs too. Not sure that celery is that nutritious. Also sometimes when you eat low carb you have to eat higher calories foods to get your calories up. So I wouldnt really worry too much about the calories in a few sticks, but its best to figure out what to eat in advance so your food stays beneath the carbs and also is high enough to support your daily body functions.0

Fat is very important. thats what a ketogenic diet is about. eat 70% fat 20% protein and 10% or less of carbs...thats how you get into ketosis.0 -
Celery with cream cheese and a TINY bit of garlic salt on top is AMAZING.0

Celery is fine. Fiber is a necessity when eating keto and that's about the only thing celery is good for. I'd suggest that instead of 2 sticks, eat one stick filled with cream cheese. Get the bulk of your carbs from nuts, berries (in moderation) leafy green veggies and cauliflower.
Keep an eye on your electrolytes. Chicken stock, lite salt and ElectroMIX can help you there.
Don't worry about fat. Keep your carbs low and hit your protein target (not as a percentage, but a weight!) and eat the remainder in fat, until you're full.0 -
I like the Celery with cream cheese in it I have 1 sticks.0
