Hypothyroidism and Working Out

I am currently 5 months postpartum with twins and I am battling thyroid issues. First it started out as EXTREME HYPER where my heart was hitting 190+ at gym so my doctors medicated me and told me to stay out of the gym for now, then last friday I was told I am EXTREME HYPO. I am released to go back to the gym now which is a plus but I am wondering if there is even any point. My TSH is 46.9 (normal range is .3 - 3.76) so basically my thyroid isn't working at all. They will re test my levels in 2 weeks to see if my body will adjust as needed or if we will have to start meds. I am just trying to determine if going to the gym is even worth it, I could basically eat grass all day long right now and gain weight. Very frustrating.

Wow, sorry to hear your thyroid is so out of whack. If your doctor says you can still go to the gym, it'd be worth it just for the health benefits. You may have trouble losing, but it would probably help negate some of the gain as well as help you get fitter and relieve stress. It couldn't hurt to try as you may end up feeling better.

First, what you are going through is not unusual post partum. So do not panic, things will settle down. And TSH of 46, believe it or not, is not extreme hypo, do not panic. Once you recover from the meds, your hormones settle down after the initial post partum period, things will be better.
Second, if you do remain hypo, it is not the end of the world, just a few months to figure out the final dosage of meds you need, a pill every morning and visits to the endocrinologist once a year. You get used to it, honestly.
Third, no, being hypo does not mean you end up looking like a cow because you ate a bowl of celery, or that life is over. Untreated hypothyroidism does make losing weight harder and it drains your energy, so you cannot do your normal activities and end up gaining, but it is not magical weight gain. If you do have the energy to work out, absolutely do it, and it will help you get in shape, same as if you never had a thyroid issue. And monitor what you eat, if you e.g. end up depressed and eat everything in sight, of course you will gain, but it will not be your thyroid causing this.
Be patient, live your life like you normally would, keep up with your dr's appointments, and you will be fine.

i'd say definitely do some gym times if you feel up to it, to keep your fitness levels up.

hope your thyroid settles down soon x

EDIT: just seen the other post, yes what they said - after i started taking meds for my hypothyroid i still put on 2 stone the next few years by eating too much and not exercising. the magic pills didn't help me lose weight as i was told (d'oh)
  • Yes I went through this same thing after my first child but it wasn't as extreme. Im just really frustrated b/c I had worked my *kitten* off From Jan 6th to Feb to lose 10lbs only to be told to STOP going to gym b/c my heart rate was so messed up. And now with the fluctuation of medication and bloating most of the weight has come back. Just wish it was in my control and right now it has everything going against me.

If I continue to workout and hope that it will mask the weight gain...do you think I would still be able to lose inches and or see definition in toning.?
