Yes. Everyone is discussing a very general concept of "weightlifing" and throwing their facts around while completely disregarding that different types of picking up and putting down things of different weight and at a different rate cause a completely huge range of caloric burns from basically nada to very high. Hell, we even have some throwing in their steady state cardio warm-up as part of their weightlifting routine.

Just to clarify to anyone (not you specifically),
I never said it doesn't burn calories. To do so would be silly. I just said I don't count them toward my calorie goal. I don't do strength training to burn calories and lose fat. I do it so that when I DO lose the fat, there's something awesome to look at.
Edit to add to JoRocka specifically: And I seriously doubt my calorie burn weightlifting is as high as yours, hence why I also don't count it. I'm not quite that awesome yet. :flowerforyou:0 -
Weight training builds muscle mass. A body's muscle burns more calories than body fat - even when a person is standing still. The more muscle you have, the more effective the body is at burning calories. A person with more body fat has to work a lot harder than a person of equal size and weight with less fat and more muscle.0

I really hope that wasn't a comment to my post. There is nothing wrong with doing a "cardio" warm up before lifting weights. I work the stair climber or elliptical at high resistance for 10 minutes to get my legs some work. In the plus, I burn some calories. I am not looking to gain muscle right now. I still have 9 lbs to lose. I am lifting now to get into a habit, get stronger, so that when my 9 lbs are done, I can start eating at a surplus and put on some muscle.0 -

I was simply putting that I know I burn calories during a weight lifting session....of course you do...your body is moving. But I do not count it towards my overall calories burned because it isn't a "cardio" activity. It is a nice mental burn.0 -

For me some weight training is good heart-pounding cardio (i.e. circuit training) and other times the work out is more steady and slow with a more modest calorie burn. However, I don't log my work outs solely to figure out whether or not I can/should consume more calories. If I have commited to a certain number or type of cardio and/or weight training sessions per week it gives me a great deal of satisification to look at exercise reports that show that I followed through. (Others may not find this motivating but it works like a charm for me.). As you get thinner and stronger it is also a useful resource for looking back on what you did and figuring out what you may need to refine in your quest for the body you want. Of course I'm 51, and can no longer rely solely on memory :laugh:
The cardio section does have things like strengthen training, circuit, and bootcamp so you should find an option that matches your routine. That was my next question, once I put in the cardio and weight training I did today, I had an extra 670 calories to eat and frankly I don't want to use them but then I get that threatening message of, you're not eating enough calories....0 -
You can enter it in as cardio and you'll get a general calorie burn for strength training
BUT
Strength training is not for burning calories. It is for increasing strength and retaining/building muscle. If you want to increase your calorie deficit, then you need to do cardio. I personally do not log my strength training here.
