Finally Committed - But Boy do I Need Help!

HI, I am Sue and have just found MFP this week. Like many I have lost, but mostly gained weight over the past 20 years until I find myself at 48 and over 200 pounds (on a 5 ' 4" frame). I just returned from my mother's funeral, a joyous week bc I know she is no longer in pain and with the lord, but also a soul searching week as I know she would not have died at 75 if it wasn't for the neglect on her body. I am asking myself - do I want to be in her position 25 years from now? My answer is always no, but I also know if I don't face it now, that is right where I'll be. I am the type that always drops my plans for my husband and kids, and I am not very good at self care (am much better at self deprecation) I know that I need support to stick with my goals this time, but every time I have tried this with my friends from work or church the group has not worked - either it starts to become an obsession where the conversation is never about anything but food and weight loss (I want to lose weight to experience life again, not to be obsessed with food) or a competition, of which I will always lose bc I am not a competitive person. I am hoping to find friends who are or have been in the same situation.

Hi Sue,
I've found that MFP works when other things have not . I like the structure. I also learn so much from reading here (which I did not do until recently).
I little about me - I'm mid 40's and started at 225bls so I know the feeling of weight creeping on!
Welcome aboard. You can do this - one day at time always with an eye towards your goal0 -
Hi Sue, I just joined on Wednesday. I'm 57,5'4" and I weigh 269. I'm a lot like you & could use support also. My name is Anna
I hope to hear from you soon. I'm sorry for your loss.0 -
Wow, that`s me all over! I love MFP. It has helped me do what I was beginning to think was impossible...eat all the foods I love and still lose weight! I am newly 51, beginning weight of 226 and started MFP after losing approx 10 lbs with the help of some blood pressure meds my dear Doc insisted I needed! Lol! Those pills changed my life! No more night sweats, no more headaches (had those EVERY DAY, arrg) face cleared up and, TADA! I LOST WEIGHT! So, I found MFP to help keep me on track and I`m off and running! I`ve lost a total of 27 lbs and 4 pant sizes so far.
Once you get started and see the results it will be easy to keep going! YOU CAN DO THIS!
Friend me! I`d love to get to know you better!
Carol
Oh, and I`ve been able to QUARTER the size of my blood pressure medication and will probably not need it after another 10 to 15 lb loss!0 -
Curious...what were the BP pills that you are taking. I recently started on hydrochlorothiazide and have not noticed any weight change.0

HI Sue,
Wow you story seems quite familiar to so many. We all make choices that scarifice ourselves for the sake of others that seem to lead us to where we hare today- getting older with extra weight and just not feeling very confident about the future. I've started and failed at my journey so many times over the years, I lost count. But on my 45th birthday this year, something really profound happend and I made the decision to so do it anymore for vanity and looking good in cute outfits or being able to go to the beach without wanting to bury myself in the sand,, but commit to a real lifestyle change that will have a huge impact on my quality of life, and looking good is just gonna be a bonus!! I'd love to be friends and share support and successes along our journey!0 -
Tinajoe - I was the same way with the change in focus. Suddenly the 40's appear and I felt older and slower and I really just am not ready to feel older and slower. Ha! Everything felt so labored and I wanted to feel better. I am little by little. That really is a better motivator for me than just looking better, although I'm quite sure I'll enjoy the looking better part too0
