Trying to do HIIT. Am I doing it right for my level?

Okay so I started working out a few weeks ago. I have gone from 2-3 days a week to now 4-5 day a week. My goal is 3 days of FitFix (goodlife machine circuit) including 10-20 minutes of cardio (on elliptical) before and after and 30-40 minutes of straight cardio on the alternate days.
Today I tried doing HIIT for the first time. What I did was 3 mins between 3.5-4 mph then 3 mins at 6-7 mph. I did 4 reps of this for a total of 24 mins then 2.5 mins of 3.5-4 mph then 1 min of 8-9 mph then 5 min cool down at 3-4 mph.
I couldn't have done the 8-9 mph in the beginning of my work out but after the endorphins started flowing it was no prob.
Will this be effective in fat loss, building strength, and endurance?
Thanks for any help

Typically HIIT has shorter intervals, something like:
5 min warm-up
10 rounds of 15 seconds @ 9 mph : 45s @ 3 mph
5-10 minute cool-down
HIIT isn't really supposed to be much longer than 15 minutes.
HOWEVER, what you're doing is still burning calories and will improve your endurance. HIIT isn't the best for building strength, but you'll likely keep your muscle mass doing it, provided you eat your protein.0
