Waiting until you're confused is not the way to go about things. You need to self advocate and do research. The people here who are very knowledgeable didn't learn everything from asking questions on forums. They did research. If your knowledge base is compiled of what you think, and answers that you've received, than 90% of it is probably outdated myths and bunk science.

Do yourself a favor and research fatloss in its entirety.

Read every article in www.bodtyrecomposition.com 's fat loss section and youll know a F load more than you will by just dinking around asking questions. Quite frankly, its a completely inefficient use of your time. You'll probably get some good answers, but, you wont ask all the right questions and your knowledge base will be VERY incomplete.

food for thought

Id bet that people who actually did this kind of research are ten fold more successful than those who did not. I dont think thats an exaggeration.

I actually do a alot of my own research. However, I'm glad I asked questions in these forums. I was drinking an herbal tea and it was a girl on here that told me that the senna leaves in there were a bad for me. So I researched it, and she was right. I read great reviews online about it, but no one ever said that it could be harmful to my stomach lining. I'm glad she brought it to my attention.

    Knowledge is power!

Unfortunately "doing internet research" can sometimes lead you in the same traps of incomplete knowledge or ridiculously false information, so good sources are just as important as doing the research.

I second that. One of my friends calls me the queen of google because I look things up. Sometimes asking people questions gives you insight that you may not have had prior to asking.

How dare you advocate the eradication of blissful, willful, and comfortable ignorance through diligent education? :grumble:

Sometimes you do not know there is a question, unless someone says something that triggers the question. Researching is good, but there are a lot of conflicting information out there. People need someplace that they can trust, respect, or know that they will get multiple opinions to weigh the information that they are gathering.

Without the forum, I would never have even heard about www.bodtyrecomposition.com , so how would I know to go there and read anything?

You would think though that a person would do a cursory amount of research before asking on a forum, however we know from all the very very dumb questions that are asked that can't possibly be true

I've searched the forums, I've asked questions, I've been on google - If I didn't I wouldn't have found out 1/2 of what I know. By asking questions, sometimes even vague answers like "google _________________" has lead me to find things I didn't know I should even try to look up (or heard the term before).

There is no such thing as a dumb question - except the one that isn't asked........

I think perhaps the most frustrating to me is when people don't even research the forum that they are posting on. I'm convinced someone creates a NEW post asking if they should eat back exercise calories every day. You could spend hours reading all of the old threads regarding exercise calories, but no one searches before they ask again.

That's not true, there are plenty of truly dumb questions, several of which are asked daily on these very forums.

I agree...at least for myself. That is the difference that I have made this time around...I researched. It can be exhausting trying to dig your way through the info that is available...sorting the good from the bad. I found this true not only for weight loss but for fitness and health. There is a lot of contradictory information out there.

I still have 30 to 40lbs left to lose and I have already started researching how to maintain when I reach my goal. I want a plan in place long before I get to that point.

Well...sadly sometimes those dumb questions get some dumb answers from others that have done no research.

It is our health that we are talking about here...even when I get or read some info on these forums that I think is sound advice I still go do my own research.

Yes like...how many calories were in the apple that I ate for lunch...or...how many calories were in the bowl of strawberries.

Then when you ask how much they weighed the answer you get is...it was a "big" bowl.

that was kinda my point.. questions go unasked, thus, asking questions isnt enough...

I agree with the first paragraph, and the line afterwards, but the rest seemed like an ad.

it is an ad, but, im no shill... i just figured i should offer some sort of alternative rather than just say what not to do. As another poster said, quality of research and sources is important. For that reason, I included a source of which I trust in the data thats provided.

Lyle McDonald isnt the end all be all and your should always get your data from more than one source or you become biased and ill informed. That being said, I really like his work and how he presents information.
This sounds like a rant disguised as advice.

its both and its also trolling, but, the response hasn't been the uproar I'd expected. I do believe what I said, though. Yet another failure at instigating the forums. Perhaps I should just start another "Calorie isnt a calorie" thread

Your derailing my topic, but, I got something for this. Use your trusty google-fu and use this query "Why _____ is bad for you"... Substitute any superfood for the blank. Ive tried several and I always get some BS [usually] article.. Point being, no matter what it is, someone says its bad for you.

This also points out how research can be just as bad without credible sources. Which brings me full circle.

I actually started my research several years ago by going on forums and asking what I should read. I listened to the advice of veterans of BB.com and read up on authors that were suggested

I guess forums are good after all
