I have a chin question..help?

So, the dreaded double chin-I have that bit of fat under my chin, and the skin seems to go from there diagonally to my neck, making me look even more chunky-faced from a profile view. Does this ever actually go away, or am I looking forward to having a pelican-neck for life? Just curious if anyone has managed to get a nice neck-to-chin 90 degree-ish angle from weight loss, without having any nip/tuck done.

I'm 25, hoping my skin will still have the elasticity to tighten back up.

    Hi:

    Short answer: yes.

It will take time though. Unfortunately, we can not spot reduce. Your chin will look better when your body weight loss progress At what point ? It depends on the individual, each body is different. If you keep up with body weight loss, you will get there, eventually.

I suggest you start lifting weights if you are not doing it already. That helps with shaping the body. There are tons of weight lifting information at MFP message boards and groups.

Good luck in your healthy journey

I have a short lower jaw so will never have the strong defined jaw line but losing weight has helped a lot!

I had the double chin thing going on and yup it went away. Because I carry most of my fat in my mid section, it was actually one of the first things to go. Just remember first on last off.

I'm not saying this to sound negative but in my opinion a lot of the double chin thing is just genetic/individual. I only had a double chin when I was over 280 lb. My stepmom is a size 5 and has a double chin. She has never been bigger than size 10 in her life.

There can be a lot of genetics involved in this one. I have my family's dreaded Polish chin much like you described. If I'm even slightly overweight I have a double chin and it's always been my most self-conscious feature. It most likely will go away with weight loss (mine did) although you may never have the super strong, 90 degree jaw line.

I agree. I still have a little blub of fat under my chin when I am 140 lbs. I can have visible collar/chest bones but a double chin.

Genetics determine where you store fat and they also determine how long that fat takes to come off.

I appreciate your input; I'm betting I'll be one of the 'lucky' ones who have the genetic double-chin lol, but hoping a bit of fat-loss will improve things! I think I just needed to hear its at least a possibility; gives me encouragement to be patient, keep working and not get too down over it. Also, I'm hoping that by the time I've lost weight and feel fitter from all the cardio and strength training; I'll be all "Chin? Why would I give a damn about my chin? I feel AWESOME."

I'm super nervous about this myself. A friend of mine lost 116 in the past year and he went from a round, jolly, double-chinned face to a, as the OP put it, a pelican neck. I'm so afraid that when I drop all this weight I'll like, head to toe, like a deflated balloon.

You may never had a 90 degree neck on profile. While you can and will lose the extra fat/double chin, the musculature and structure underneath may be such that you'll have more of a 45 degree neck, no matter how much weight you lose. Some people just aren't built that way.

I've pretty much lost my double chin, but am just not built to have a 90 degree neck (much to my dismay LOL). There is a very small amount of loose skin there, but really, it's just the structure of my neck.

ETA: I will say, I look pretty good from the front. It's just my profile that's not fantastic, and, it's not like I go around seeing my profile all day LOL. So, I'll stick with worrying about the parts I can see.

Thanks! It does help actually. I imagine that's how my neck might look, its kinda similar to what I have now (though yours has less chub lol.) But you look great; I guess having less overall fat in body and face makes the biggest difference.

Love your attitude :) Who needs a best side when the front is awesome, right?

I have lost a few chins with 40 lbs (one the first areas to go - but my hips are hanging on, grrr). But I am genetically doomed to have a double chin and jowly cheeks - see my mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother . . . still losing weight has and will continue to make some difference, so at least it will be clear that it is genetics and not fat at play!
