I am on day 3 of a water fast. One of my major goals for this fast is weight loss and entering ketosis. I know its normal to feel off when entering ketosis, I just want to make sure that these symptoms are me going into it.

I have zero energy. I was fine the last 2 days but now I cant even work out. Also I am really cold but it might have something to do with the fact that ive been laying nearly still for a long time. My toung is white.

Why are you doing this? This can be dangerous. People have died from doing this. Why would anyone make themselves sick like this? I don't understand......
  • Its actually really good for you. Research it a little bit.

No it's not good for you. After 72 hours of no eating your body can have metabolic adaptation and slow down. And considering you have very very little to lose, it's even more important to eat calories or your body will end up losing lean body mass... probably just as much as fat. Also, I assume you aren't under doctors supervision which is a requirement with any very low calorie diet. So if you aren't eating and aren't under supervision, its NOT safe and quite possible going to make things worst.

I would say that a big part of your tiredness is your body not having any food at all for energy... when you are trying to get into ketosis, you want to feed your body healthy fat so that it will know it is readily available and keep your metabolic engine burning at a high rate. Fasting may help you lose quickly, but it is mostly water (which comes off quickly when eating a keto diet anyway ) and will come back on once you do start eating normally again. If you are serious about eating a keto diet then research it... and follow it.... but don't starve yourself. Starving yourself will not result in you being happy. Eating Keto is naturally diuretic, and will cause tiredness once you enter it as your body adjusts to switching over to fat as its main energy source. It quickly passes after a day or so though... and then you get a major energy boost as you continue keeping carbs low. Regardless of what eating plan you follow, keep in mind that the weight will only stay off if you continue eating below or at daily caloric needs, and you will eventually have to start eating again, so may as well begin teaching your body how you are going to eat for life.... which.... kinda requires eating. Hope you find long term success!

You don't need to "fast" to get your body into ketosis. Try eating something, you might be surprised what it does for your energy levels.

"Research it a little", she says.

You are asking other people if being cold, having a white tongue and no energy is normal.

Wow, this does not sound good.

The best way to get into ketosis (and healthy) is cut back on the carbs (make sure your getting enough protein) and up your fat intake.

You can easily get into ketosis whilst still being in a healthy deficit range on your calorie target.

Make sure your drinking enough as well.

As far as the lack of energy goes, yes that is normal as your body adapts to burning ketones as a primary fuel. It can last anywhere from a day to a couple of weeks.

Also over this period it is probably advisable to ease back on your exercise until you have adapted.

Just make sure your eating and drinking enough and getting all you micro nutrients.

    Good luck.

Plus feeling overly cold is a symptom of not eating enough.

    Really good for you???

This is how you described your condition...

"I have zero energy. I was fine the last 2 days but now I cant even work out. Also I am really cold but it might have something to do with the fact that ive been laying nearly still for a long time. My toung is white."

    What about that is good?

At age 19...this is not good for you to be in this condition.

    Food = energy

If you're not putting any food into your body for three days, it's no wonder you're exhausted.

    Eat. Seriously.

water fast? im sorry but if your having nothing but water your on a hunger strike, the irish have done it during serious situations, many that survived have serious health complications

ive been in ketosis several times on doctor reccomended diets ( yes i ate ) and yes being colds normal on those with reduced calorie intake as your body reserves energy for essential processes like powering your brain, keeping your heart pumping etc

ketogenic diets are not about sticking to zero calories. heck i know people with epilepsy who stick to a high fat, 2000+ calorie ketogenic diet to control seizures

please consider eating a ketogenic diet insted of starvation

Wow! Seriously? Not sure if your research but I don't think exercise and no food intake is supportive of a healthy balanced life style. I would suggest that you're body is screaming feed me please!

Please eat something. Going on a water fast while trying to sustain a low carb diet to enter ketosis is a recipe for disaster.

Please, don't play around with your health. If you choose to do a low carb diet, it is very important to inform yourself about the process and keep your electrolytes in balance at this time.

You don't need to stop eating to go into ketosis. You could be eating a 3 egg omelet and 2 slices of bacon for breakfast, a caesar salad without croutons for lunch and a cheesy chicken casserole for dinner on the low carb eating plan and lose. Just keep your carbs under 20-you will see results, quickly.

Here is a text quoted from WIkipedia based on several scientific sources regarding water fasting.
"Some engage in water fasting as a detox diet. While there is no established body of scientific evidence showing that any detoxification occurs because of water fasting, there is evidence of harmful side effects from such diets.During water fasting, no energy is spent on digestion other than to heat any cold water to reach homeostasis of a uniform body temperature. The fast is normally undergone with the belief that it can bring about detoxification for greater health. The reasoning is that less energy is expended on digestion of foods, resulting in more energy for the rest of the body to expel toxins as well as to recover and heal itself from the stresses digestion places upon it. ..Metabolism will slow during an extended fast and physical/mental activity should be minimized for safety reasons.

The excessive intake of water without the corresponding amount of electrolytes can lead to hyponatraemia, also known as water intoxication. This can lead to permanent brain damage, coma, and even death."

yet. you say you are doing really good..

What are you doing is dangerous. If you want to go into Ketosis you ramp your carbs down but continue eating foods high in fat and protein..at least that is my limited understanding. You don't just go on some three day water fast and eat nothing..

What you are doing is going to lead to metabolic damage, potential starvation mode, and eventually skinny fat…

you probably need professional help if you think that this is "safe"…..

You're likely in ketosis already, and a 3 day water fast is entirely unnecessary for entering ketosis and for fat loss. You can do the same just by sticking to your macro and calorie goals. You want ketosis, then you eat a low carb diet focusing more of your calories on fat and protein. You want fat loss, then you eat at a calorie deficit. If you're cold, your tongue is white, and you can barely move, you've gone past the idea of healthy fasting. I fast quite frequently, in controlled amounts, and I have none of these symptoms. If you want to fast in a safer way, read up a little about intermittent fasting, maybe.

I assume your health is important to you. That's why most are on this site. Think about refocusing, because this isn't healthy. You say that fasting is healthy, and yes, it can be, but not like you're doing it. That's just abusing your body.

Coming to this conclusion after you said you did research is dumbfounding. Well as Forest Gump says: "stupid is as stupid does"
  • You dont need to fast to get into ketosis - research it a little bit.

You're likely already there, buy some ketostix and check your urine - and then for god sakes, eat something before you pass out. What you're doing is very dangerous.

    Day three of how many?

I like fasting 24-36 hrs and I'll be building up.

    Have you fasted before?

72 hours for a first time fast might be a little extreme.

How long do you plan on going for?

If you're almost done stick too it!

    You're almost there!

If you're planning on more then maybe end it early and try again next month.

Make sure you're getting minerals & electrolytes (it's ok to have a bit of tea and juice.)

    Good luck!

Reeaaaally? you feel weak after three days of not eating. Who would have thought? But to answer your question: yes, it is normal. When people don't eat, they don't feel good. Anecdotal support for clinical research can be found in testimonies from concentration camp prisoners, castaways at sea and Andes plane crash survivors.

These testimonies all seem to confirm your evidence: not eating makes your body try to shut down i.e. "zero energy". These control populations all seem to have been involuntarily successful at losing weight, but they didn't look or perform much better after their experience :).

OP your thread upsets me on so many levels...

I genuinely fear for your safety and health...even your life.

You tell people to research the technique you are doing that is obviously having a negative impact on your health but you have obviously done little research yourself into health or nutrition, or the potential severity of the symptoms you described based on the actions that led to them.

Firstly I would recommend eating obviously...maybe whilst letting someone know of the physical state you are in so they can take you to see a medical practitioner of some kind.

Once you have found out you are physically well and of any impact you have had on your health I would recommend doing thorough research on ketosis or any dietary preference you are about to embark on.

Seriously do not take your body or life for granted, seek some help.

After the condition that she says her body is in it is hard for me to comprehend that you would encourage her to stick with it or to even encourage her to try it again next month.

She admits...she can hardly more, her tongue has turned white, she is cold...does that sound as if she needs to have a bit of tea?

....agree w/basically everyone else, eat something. I'm not going to say you'll die from a 72 hr fast, people can go weeks without food if they have water, however I wouldn't recommend it nor would I describe it as "healthy".

    Yes.

A white tongue is a sign of dehydration or detox, and since she's on water, it's probably the latter.

Tea is very warming and has nutrients, gentle on the gut.

She could feel cold from weight loss or just because of weather changes. (I feel cold from weight loss even when I eat 1,800 cal in a day.)

I'm not a physician or medical professional, but I do believe fasting has profound health benefits. That does seem like a long fast, though. But you have to work into it, not just jump into a really long fast.

To many variables to know is this normal or not.
