Frustrated with Thyroid Issues

I've been incredibly frustrated with my weight loss attempts. The last time I was on MFP, I lost 20 lbs. Now I'm having trouble losing 2. The only difference now is that I no longer have a thyroid.

My levothyroxine dose has gone up three times in the last year. I'll find out this week if my current dose is alright. Before this past year, I had been on a steady dose for a year and was able to lose weight. I felt good about myself. I'm not sure what has changed now.

I just wanted to rant. But I think I'm in need of some support.

  • Hi there! I don't have a thyroid either, so I feel your pain. I know how frustrating it is to feel like you're trying to swim upstream in regards to weight loss. I put on 40 lbs after my thyroidectomy and it's been a struggle to take it off since. I've noticed that I have to eat a little less than people the same weight and activity level as me in order to lose anything. I also notice that I have to be extremely consistent. For example, I was having "cheat days" every weekend, but I had to stop when I noticed that it was ruining all the successes I'd had for the week. I too have had more than a few dosage changes during the year since my surgery, but I have found that if I am very consistent and keep my intake below 1350 a day, I lose weight at a steady 1 lb a week.

It probably requires a little more willpower and motivation on our part to overcome the sluggishness of having no thyroid, so I encourage you to find ways to stay motivated every day! For example, I enjoy looking at success stories or window shopping for cute clothes I can't wear right now. Those things help me keep my eye on the prize even when I am feeling like I am being sucked down a drain. Haha. Good luck!

MFP has a Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism group: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/770-hypothyroidism-and-hyperthyroidism

I have Hashimoto's (autoimmune thyroid disease). I lost way more slowly than most MFPers, but I lost. All I did was eat at a deficit. If you're not losing, you may be underestimating your food &/or overestimating your burns.
