First of all, hello to everyone and I am glad I have stumbled upon this website. I have briefly scanned through various threads so far, and it looks like a good place to vent, get advice and any needs you may have. I apologise in advance if this introduction is too long-winded.
I have a few newbie questions to ask as I am unsure about things going forward, and would be very appreciative of any advice given. I am 24 years old, male, 5'7 in height and my current weight is 224 lbs. My dream target over the next year is to lose 70 lbs.
My general lifestyle over the past 7 years has involved no exercise, smoking regularly, drinking alcohol 3-4 times a week and eating junk food the majority of the time. I am not active at all throughout the day because I have a standard office job which means I'm basically sat down all day.
Prior to this 7 year stint, I was obsessed with the gym for a long period, going 5 days a week and eating what I believed to be perfectly. I was very naive at this time, and I use to do large amounts of cardio each day using a stationary bike, and treadmill,(approx 700 calories) and virtually no weight training.
I now find myself in a very unhealthy lifestyle being overweight with what I would imagine a very high body fat %, and very little muscle mass due to the excessive amount of cardio I use to do, which probably destroyed most of my muscle mass. After scanning a few threads on this forum I have seen some people question if all overweight people are strong, I can confirm this is not the case with me, I am actually very weak in strength.
I have been saying to myself for the past few years that I will make big changes, today is the day I am finally doing something about it. Moving forward I'm going to quit smoking, be tee-total, eat healthy and go the gym 5 days a week. Cutting out the mentioned vices will be a massive challenge for me personally but I feel I am ready to do it.
I have several questions:
How many calories should I be consuming each day?
I want to do cardio (running/bike) each day, because I really do enjoy it, but how much should I do each day/if any
Should I just focus on a calorie deficit and weight training?
I have listed below what a typical day will include food wise going forward, what I want to know is if this includes everything I need.
Breakfast: Special K cereal with a banana
Lunch: Baked beans on wholemeal toast with an apple
Dinner: boiled potatoes, chicken breast fillet with peas and carrots.
Snacks: Walnut halves and grapes.
Thanks for reading, and I look forward to hearing from you guys!
