When did you start lifting?

I am 5'4 at 218 pounds and my goal weight is 140. What am wondering is... Is when should I start lifting? Will strength training slow down the weight loss process?
--I'm not in a rush to lose 80 pounds as I know it didn't take me just one night to put it on but.. I don't want it to take 2-3 years either.
So when did you start? How heavy were you when you started? & did it slow your weight loss down?

I started when I was about 210lbs (down from 230). It did not slow my weight loss down much - and what I continued to lose was more body fat and less muscle, so the end result looks better.
I currently weigh 180lbs, but I'm in the same size I was when I was 19 and 150lbs (size 10 pants, medium shirt). I lost 50lbs, and still have 20 or so to go....but I took a long break and just maintained (personal choice, still exercised, but didn't count consistently for several months). I'm getting back to counting calories and losing now and I will continue to lift while I do it.0 -
Right away?
I've weightlifted off and on because of the benefits of being a strong woman. There's really no reason you should wait until you're at goal weight. You'll like your body more if you start now, even if you end up losing weight slower. Personally, I didn't see the scale move much when I was actively trying to lose weight and strength train. The results in the mirror though, were undeniable.0 -
Why would you want to delay doing something that's SO beneficial? How is an activity that burns calories going to slow weight loss?0

I lifted many years ago on the Body For Life Program and saw great results.
Fast forward many years later (and two kids later) I started up again last summer.
Edit: To answer your question, I was about 35 lbs down when I started, so no I didn't start from the beginning but wish I had. I am now 59 lbs down.0 -
I wish I'd started lifting from the very beginning.
The scale didn't really move as much, but I like what I saw in the mirror a lot more than any number on the scale.0 -
I just started. I read so many stories about how much happier people are with their bodies after lifting that I thought I would try it. I am not at my goal weight.0

I started from the beginning, at 255 lbs. I think it as definitely helped my weightloss, certainly hasnt slowed it down, I dont know how it could.
I feel more toned, and stronger, its pretty impressive.
Here is my 2 month update thread I posted http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1231728-almost-30lbs-down-with-80-to-go-with-pics-jiggle-included Ive lost almost 30 lbs in 2 month, and 100% feel that because of lifting I am more toned, and less jiggly0 -
Thanks everyone!! I would rather like seeing myself naked than just a number on the scale!0

Pretty much almost at the "end". Wish I had started sooner, but it's all good. I do it now. All that matters is I'm reaping the benefits.0

Start now. You'll feel so proud when the weight comes off and your muscles start showing. Plus it helps with all your other exercises.0

I started lifting after I lost all the weight I wanted plus more. I did NOT have the body I thought I would. I looked great in clothes, but awful naked.
It has been a difficult process to put muscle back on. I wouldn't recommend getting to a low weight with a high body fat percent and poor lean mass. Start lifting now.0 -
