confused about the eliptical workouts

I am really getting confused about how many calories I am really burning on the eliptical. I recently am barrowing my mothers eliptical cos she realizes how determined I am about losing weight and getting fit..plus she's noot using it at the moment. I set the intensity level pretty high (not all the way though but close to it) I am having trouble going a straight 3 mins without break so I end up doing 3 mins 4 times a day for a total of 12 mins. But when I'm done with three mins it says I only burned 3.5 calories! I go about 3.4 miles per hour. Is the machine right? I am currently 233 pounds. Please any thoughts will be appreciated. I tried going online to calculate it with my weight..but every sight is different. I just want to know how many calories I am really burning.

Get a good HRM so you know how many calories you are burning per session. I love mine!0

Try setting the intensity to a more sustainable level and stay on it for 30-60 minutes.0

This.
If you cant afford your own HRM ...
Does the elliptical have features that let you input your weight, age? Or does it have its own HRM? They arent going to be as accurate as a chest strap HRM, but it would give you a better read.0 -
I tried that in the beginning..but still was only able to go for about 5 mins at a time with no break. So I decided to intensify it to at least try and get more out of it.0

The monitor only shows the time..distance..mph..and calories burned.0

Most important tip I can give you...
DON'T GIVE UP! Keep going with it, your stamina will come!
I tell my clients:
"If your workout isn't hard for you, it isn't hard enough."0 -
Keep on keeping on. If you can only go for a little bit maybe try interval training. Go for 30 secs, take a break for say 30 secs or 60 secs and go again. Try to do it 10 times.0
-
But my question is...if I do let's say 30 minutes at 3.4 mph I'm only gonna burn 45 calories? That doesn't make any sense.0

I guess I will just go with the lowest number calculator online. 26 calories burned in three minutes. So if I do that 4 times I would burn 104.0

Perhaps not trying to do such a high intensity to start? Start easy to stay on longer and work your way up. I will say the elliptical tells me I'm burning 60 more calories then i really am. A heart rate monitor will tell you more accurately then the machine.
You can buy a nice one for relatively cheap on Amazon. Polar is nice. I bought mine for 100 but then have one for about 40$0 -
Yeah I was just looking for one on ebay. Does it matter if its just a watch one? Is it accurate enough? I would love to get the ones that go around me but don't have the money for it right now.0

That does sem unusually low, although 12 minutes on an elliptical isn't going to burn a significant amount, possibly 100 cals at your weight and that speed.
Might be worth thinking about your expectations, you lose weight through eating less energy than you expend on a routine basis, a calorie deficit. You don't need to exercise to achieve that, and indeed in the MFP model you should be eating back the calories that you expend in exercise anyway. We exercise to improve our general health, cardio vascular work helps improve our endurance and the capacity of our system to convert energy efficiently.
With that in mind your focus on the elliptical probably needs to move more towards working up to a longer session. 3.4mph is walking pace, so set yourself a target to be able to walk for a longer period of time. I'd suggest going back to the pace where you could do five minutes, then each day push yourelf to use it at that pace for longer. Add 30 seconds each day. Do three 5 minute sessions, then on Saturday try thre 5:30 sessions, then on Monday three 6 minute sessions. Exercise conditioning is all about progression, so once you're comfortable at 20 minutes continuous then increase the pace a little, and go for 20 minutes at the higher pace. Interweave weeks of increasing time and increasing pace so that you can work up towards 60 minutes.
By the time you're there you can think about what you want to do to progress further, wheher that's moving onto running orsomething else. By that time you should have lost a chunk of weight so you'll feel better about trying something else.
I'd also suggest doing some resistance training alongside using the elliptical. given where you are bodyeight sessions are probably most appropriate for you, and there are penty of options around. Search the boards for bodyweight training for some ideas. That will help you to retain lean mass as you lose weight, which is a big benefit further down the line.0 -
When I first started using the elliptical I could only stay on it a couple of minutes. I was embarrassed as I was at the gym. But I kept at it and it wasn't long before I was able to do 30 minutes. Keep doing what you are at the lower resistance and try to stay on a little longer each day. I had to work through a little pain but it was worth it. After you master getting time built up then play with the resistance. The machine I used when putting in my weight & age I would burn about 300 calories. That was a calorie a minute. But this was when I could really work out on the machine.0

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and suggestions. I am going to take everything everyone said and put them into my eliptical training. I realize now it is more important to go as long as I can so I am gonna lower my intensity level. I am also gonna stop looking at the monitor for calories burned because I still think it is wrong. Hopefully tomorrow I can buy myself a HRM and rely on that instead. I really appreciate everyones suggestions. Thank you :-) oh by the way someone said something about strength training. I have started working out with dumbells and actually really enjoy it!0

If the elliptical is too much you can always go outside and take a walk for 30 minutes. But if you keep at it, the elliptical will become easier.0

If nothing else staying on the elliptical is going to make it easier to estimate your caloric burn. Particularly if you decide to get a HRM, HRM's are really only suited for measuring steady state cardio burns. Stick with it and I'll bet it won't be long until you can stick it out on the elliptical for a lengthier period of time.0

Per my Polar Heart Rate Monitor FT7 with chest strap I usually burn 100 cals per 10 minutes on the ellpitical machine at the gym and the read out on the machine is the same too. I start out at level 6 and go up to 8 off an on with the progam I use. I probably need to up the intensity of it more now. It really depends on how much you weight and your heart rate. My first HRM watch was only $20 at TJMaxx but didn't have a chest strap but was pretty accurate for me beginning out on workouts at the gym. I wanted something I wear in the pool so that is why I got the Polar with chest strap it is very accurate.
I love it!
Good luck and don't give up.0 -

For real. I love the elliptical since it's easier on my joints. I set mine for 30-40 minutes with alternating hills at a resistance of about 7. It helps me burn sometimes up to 400 cals, depending on how quickly I'm working it. Better phrased: The faster the music, the better the burn. :bigsmile:0
