NSV: Resisting Office Treats

I graduated from college in December and I am now working as a legal assistant at a law firm. I've never had a job where I sat at a desk all day, so it's been a bit of an adjustment. Aside from the lack of activity, the biggest challenge is that the firm provides a treat on each employee's birthday. They get to pick their own treat, and it's brought in for the office to share. Apparently, March is a huge birthday month. In the past two weeks, we've had:

Chocolate Nirvana Cake
Gourmet Cookies
Red Velvet Cake
Some other chocolate cake
Birthday cake with strawberry filling between the layers
Cupcakes

And today, a cookie cake for an attorney that ended up being out of the office. So, there will be ANOTHER cookie cake Monday so he can be here. Oh, the temptation. Now, I'm a pre-logger and I plan every single meal so that I don't have many calories to spare. Therefore, if I were to indulge in these treats, I'd have to make room by eating less of something I planned to have.

Well, I've resisted every single cake and cookie. I haven't indulged in a single bite of these delicious treats. Yesterday I made my chicken/pinto bean/avocado tacos on corn tortillas right in front of that yummy-looking yellow cake with strawberry filling. And you know what, I didn't even touch it. I haven't even sat in my office and debated on whether I could have a small piece. I just went about my day as if it wasn't even there.

How cool is that? :)

For those of you that also work in an office setting, how often do you have to resist treats brought in for employees? Or, do you resist at all?

at least 3 times a week. Our financial guy always brings in Tim Hortons, and because I sit at the round desk (reception desk) he always puts the treats right in front of my computer monitors. It takes all I have to resist. A lot of times I will rant in my personal feed on MFP. I always pick them up and put them in the kitchen so I don't have to smell the awesomeness. I can't afford 500 calories for a cinnamon roll. I keep almonds and gum in my desk for when someone walks by with their cinnamon bun and I feel like I'm going to cave. This doesn't mean I don't have a treat every once in awhile, my weakness is danishes. If there's a cherry danish in the office, damn rights I'm having one!

I have to dodge donuts or bagels on Fridays and meeting leftovers any day in the breakroom. Its tough. I try to minimize how often I walk past the breakroom area when I know there is free food in there.

For social situations, I've found saying "I'm not hungry right now", hanging out while everyone eats/chats and then taking my slice back to my desk, works well. I can have a bite and throw the rest away without offending anyone. Its easier to stick to your decision when you claim you're not hungry. The people don't try as hard to get you to eat with them. What could they possibly say to convince you to eat when you're not hungry?

I take walks around the building during my breaks and I have found that people here love to stock candy, donuts, and chips all over the place.. And today there are at least two cakes sitting out in different places. Goodness. For the most part these things aren't in sight from my actual desk, so it's no issue so long as I walk right past it all. I was offered a chocolate dipped strawberry earlier this week, though, and couldn't say no. Sometimes you indulge, but you can be choosy about what you indulge in.

Once a week one of my coworkers brings things in: last week it was chocolate covered strawberries, this week cupcakes... I just automatically say "no thank you!" and smile and not even lay my eyes on what she's got in her hands. Others bring stuff in, like dozens of donuts and cakes and cookies and we have luncheons a lot... I just stay away from it. It's not worth it.
