What was I thinking...

So to celebrate my 10 pound weight loss I decide to have an all out splurge day. I got a sausage & cheese biscuit for breakfast (it wasn't good) and I got Diary Queen burger and onion ring for lunch (it wasn't good either). I used to LOVE these foods. Honestly I had planned this day since the beginning of the week even before I knew my weight loss. I have tried to eat well all week and this was my treat. This was such a mistake. I feel horrible. Not because I ate it, I don't feel guilty, but physically ill. My stomach hurts and I just feel like poo! While I was eating this all I could think of was how much I wanted a salad. Has anyone else had this happen? I have said from the beginning of this journey that I will not give up the foods that I love, however, I think my body has other plans. If I could go back to 2 hours ago and know what I know now, I would have not eaten this delectable but horrible food. I feel as though I am on the verge of a massive breakup. I'm not going to lie...I am heartbroken

What's the problem? Your body craves healthy food now. That's really cool. There's people struggling with their weight who'd kill to have a body/brain that craved healthy food.
That being said, the breakfast biscuit probably will never taste good again. But the burger and onion rings did, at least for me.0 -
Oh it's not a bad thing that my body is changing. It's just that it was totally unexpected for me today. I had such wonderful expectations for this lunch and it just didn't make me feel as satisfied as I was hoping. These types of foods are what I would eat every day for breakfast and lunch. I am finding that my healthy choice meals and salad are much more satisfying. I have no doubt that I will do this again...but maybe I won't do breakfast and lunch. Just one or the other.0

I've never craved salad, but yes, once I stopped eating low quality crap food and started cooking my own healthy meals I realized that the low quality crap food was just low quality food that tastes like crap.0

It happens. When I first started being really strict with low carb, nothing high carbed, none of my old sweet favorites, tasted the same.
Same thing happened when I switched over to IFing and a more plant based diet for awhile. My cravings have become more along the lines of wanting peas and apples, than anything else.
But it reverts back pretty quickly if you keep eating your old favorites. The body is just fluid like that. I've found through a lot of trial and error that I can absolutely radically alter what my body craves by altering what I do, and do not, give it. Unlike what many claim, I find that absence does NOT make the food grow tastier if I stay away long enough.
I've kept the doors open for sweet foods; they use to be a HUGE problem, but I didn't want to cut them from my diet completely.
I don't restrict on any food groups anymore, but the changes I've made over the years have had lasting effects. While I still enjoy bread, pasta, potato chips, fries, burgers, and pizza when I do have them, my cravings for those foods are pretty much dead. I almost never desire them, and even when I do enjoy them the cravings never come back like they did back in the day. I could absolutely have some everyday, because there are no foods on my "no" list...I just genuinely want other things now, and yes, like salads.0 -
My suggestion: Remember the "so not worth it" feeling and move on. One day won't wreck you, as long as you go back to your new routine. Congrats on your milestone! :drinker:0

I have new foods that I look forward to on my splurge days! Cashews and extra peanutbutter! I know they are healthy but I don't eat them oftern because they are so calorie dense.0

I feel like poo after splurging on the bad stuff, but not enough to stop me from doing it on my treat day the following week. Ha ha!0

I only feel like poo when I've had super spicy food for the first time in a while...
Really, this happens to a lot of people. Your body is just used to a different macro balance than it used to have. You mess with it once, and sometimes your body reacts to it.0 -
I think this is a common experience. I had a massive sweet tooth before, but after cutting back on carbs, a lot o the old stuff just doesn't taste that great anymore. I find that my taste buds previously were sort of numbed to all the sugar, so I needed a lot to get that satisfaction. But, after getting off the sugar rollercoaster, now a little goes a lot further and I find that a lot of the cheaper stuff just doesn't appeal to me at all anymore.
Like I can really, really enjoy a good cup of Italian coffee (I have one of those stove top bialettis from when I lived in Italy) with some real cream and sugar (not much since it's a really concentrated cup). And it's like heaven. But, I go back to Starbucks and grab a frappuccino or something and I can't get more than a sip or two down -- it's like a mountain of sugar with some coffee and flavoring thrown in. Same with chocolate -- M&Ms and cheaper candy just doesn't taste that good. So, if I want a piece of something sweet, I'll go for good quality dark chocolate (little bordeaux candies form Sees being one of my favories). But, literally, most of the time I just cut it in half and it satisfies the craving. Or most pastries just don't do it for me -- they just taste super flour-y and bland and I tend to prefer something like creme brule now, which tastes super decadent to me now. The only "old" thing that still has the same pleasure for me are cheesecake and glazed donuts -- though if I have one, I just eat half. I don't want to even finish the other half! Also, certain things that I thought were so-so taste much better now -- like certain fruits just taste awesome now and almost feel like a dessert on their own!
I never, ever would have thought I'd be saying this. But, it's been true for me. You'll find what still does it for you and what seems like a total waste of calories now. And the upside is that those things aren't nearly as tempting anymore, if at all.0 -
OMG I know this feeling all too well. I had planned on a cheat meal that I had wanted for WEEKS. I wanted all out gross diner food like wings, quesadilla, omelette, home fries, disco fries. I took like 2 or 3 bites of the fried stuff and I wanted to BARF. This was after a few months of eating clean. UGH! I was so dissapointed!!! Honestly, I think the dissapointment comes from WASTING calories on a meal that SUCKS. That's what killed me. Not a bad problem to have but still annoying.
I never realized how much my tastebuds would change. SOOO many things tastes different to me now. One thing that is totally noticeable and makes me sad sometimes is that fried food and fast food (except pizza) make me completely ill. I still crave McDonalds sometimes but I know it's going to kill my stomach so I don't even bother.0 -
This is common with many people. It happened to me with McDonalds. I used to eat it, eat it, and eat it some more. LOL! I stopped eating it for about a year because I got tired of it, not so much to lose weight because I know it’s all about moderation. I made the mistake of getting a Quarter Pounder meal. My body flat out rejected it and I was sick as hell.0

Not the salad part...I pretty much loath salads and have to be in a very particular mood to enjoy them. But **** food is **** food and I've never understood how people can eat so much fast food and junk, it's always made my stomach turn even before I started here losing weight. I really can't imagine what fast food would do to me...I had some about a year ago on a road trip when we stopped at a Wendy's...didn't go so well. I don't think I've had McDonalds in over a decade and I dare say I don't think I've ever had anything at a DQ other than ice cream.0 -

My biggest shocker was microwave popcorn. I started popping fresh popcorn in a paper bag and adding real butter.
I felt lazy one day and made the last bag of microwave popcorn because I didn't feel like doing it the slightly longer way.. and OMG.. it was like someone poured motor oil into my mouth. Artificial butter has got to be the nastiest thing on earth. And we GET USED TO IT.0 -
I didn't eat Taco Bell for like, 3 months. Then I decided to go crazy and have some TB! You know what happened? It was exactly as delicious as I thought it would be and I felt fine after eating it.
So no, I don't relate.0 -
I used to not like salads at all....AT ALL! However, the more of them I eat the more I like them. I found myself at the grocery store last week analyzing the lettuce they wayI once would snacks. Now when I say salad, I am talking lettuce, carrots and cucumbers. I might add a little cheese every now and then and maybe some meat, but overall they are pretty boring. I do not do dressing, just because I dont like it. It just makes me feel good. The best way I describe my food feeling today is like a really bad drunk. You amp yourself up for a good time and then you take it too far and you are just wishing for a magical way to make it go away. I have drank atleast 40oz of water since eating just trying to flush my system out or atleast think I am. So far I am feeling better.0

Last time I had Taco Bell it was delicious. So maybe its not all junk, just the heavy greasy stuff.0 -
Not sure if anyone else has said this (apologies if they have!) but I've always thought it was a risky business using food as your weight loss treat? Not because of potential weight gain or ruining your "diet" (It's not a diet it's a LIFESTYLE CHANGE) but because then aren't you building these foods up in your mind so high that a) they'll never meet your expectations ever again and b) you'll crave them more because of their "treat-y" associations?
I feel your pain though, yesterday I had some cheesecake and it was way sweeter than I remember and I had the classic "was it worth it?" feeling afterwards when I saw that it had cost me going over my daily calorie goal
Congrats on your 10 lb loss though! That's fantastic and definitely worth celebrating0 -
i have a theory on this subject. It only takes 2-3 weeks to get something out of your system. For example when I gave up pop I tried it again after a few weeks and I was discusted with the taste. Same goes for fast food (way too salty). Its a great motivator for someone who has something that they really love and they stay away from it for awhile, and you try it again you can't stand the taste.
That is my advice, go cold turkey of something that you want to give up and give it some time. When you come back to it, trust me it won't taste the same.0 -

Oh good grief, yes, fruit! While I've recovered my enjoyment of more rich, sugary desserts, this journey has brought fruit back into my life in amazing ways.
Frozen granny smith apples are literally now one of my top 5 favorite things to eat. Frozen green grapes also taste like candy, and I've rediscovered an appreciation for plums, bananas, raisins, and cold oranges.0
