Eating mushrooms raw?

HI! I was watching a cooking show and saw that they put mushrooms raw in sandwiches and salads. Can you eat mushrooms raw or do you always have to saute or roast them?
I'm buying packaged mushrooms from TESCO and I'd love to put them raw in a salad or a sandwich but I didn't know if they were edible this way.

You can certainly eat them raw - but I don't like the taste or texture. Sautéed is the way I prefer them and I eat them a LOT!0

Yes absolutely they can be eaten raw although you may not like the taste. Try them & see just give em a good wash first.0

You can eat them raw, but only after rinsing them good. They can be eaten in moderation. You will often see sliced raw mushrooms in salad bars.0

Yes, you can definitely eat them raw - just make sure to wash them if they're not pre-washed. :flowerforyou:0

I don't care for them raw, but I do often dice up a couple and add them into my scrambled egg in the morning.0

I eat cremini (baby portabella) raw. Most others I saute because I'm not a fan of the texture when raw.
The are great additions to salads and sandwiches. I've also sliced the cremini and dip in hummus.0 -

They have a weird texture when raw I think! But you can eat them raw if you like.0 -

I always eat the baby portabella mushrooms raw they are great in salad, but yeah make sure to wash them if they aren't already pre washed because they will be dirty :P0

I have always read that you should not wash mushrooms, but wipe them clean with a clean towel. However, others say it is okay to do. It has something to do with the mushrooms absorbing the water you wash them in.
I've done both. I can't tell any difference.0 -
Do not wash white mushrooms. Wipe them off with a paper towel. They will get slimy. Also store them in a paper bag in the fridge.0

In my world there's only 2 ways to have mushrooms - raw or cooked in butter.0

I prefer them saute'd and roasted. But I've boiled them in foods before. Cook 'em how you want, really.0 -
I do! Actually today I did! Nom. Nom. Nom.0

I don't eat them often--not really a fan--but they are good for you. BUT having said that, I would never eat them raw because they could contain pathogens if eaten raw. They are grown on pure horse manure (I used to live a few miles from a mushroom growing operation) and the smell is really awful when they are "cooking down" the horse manure. If they don't let it cook down enough, the temperatures could be too low to destroy all the pathogens.0
