Activity tracker that doesn't require a computer?

My son is looking for a wristband type activity tracker, but can't seem to find one that doesn't require a computer for activation or need of a USB port. He doesn't own a computer. He has an iPad and an iPhone 5s so wants to use those but neither the iPad or his phone has a USB port. Does anyone know of a good activity tracker that doesn't require a computer? Thanks for any help or advice you can provide.

Although I use my Fitbit with my computer it also syncs with the iPhone app. I don't think a computer is necessary.
I just realized you said a wristband type. I Have the clip on battery Fitbit. Not sure about the bracelet one,0 -
Fitbit does have a band-type monitor, but looking at the web-site it says you have to have a USB port to either start up or do something on a computer. Thanks, though.0

Thanks. Maybe the fitbit will work for him then.0

I have an iPhone (no computer), and I have both a Fitbit Flex and a Jawbone UP. (All of the Fitbit devices are compatible.)0

Would you recommend the flex or the Up?0

Would you recommend the flex or the Up?
Just to throw my two cents in - I just switched to a fitbit after going through 4 UP bands in 9 months. The quality control of the UP is not great. They all failed within 8-10 weeks. I've only had the fitbit flex for a week, so I can't say how long this will last, but I was fed up with the Jawbone. The newer UP bands don't require plugging into the phone to sync so this may help with the longevity. I think the process of taking it off several times a day to sync caused damage to the internal electronics.0 -

I much prefer the UP app. My UP had to be replaced several times, but my UP24 (which syncs via Bluetooth, like Fitbit) has been great. (I'm on my 3rd Flex, and the Fitbit replacement process is much smoother than Jawbone's.)
MFP has a Jawbone UP Bracelet group: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/13370-jawbone-up-bracelet0 -
I got a FitBit flex (the wrist band), so I'll weigh in my 2 cents while it's still fresh in my mind.
For the FitBit, all you need is a computer for activation. You need to stick one of the pieces (from the set provided) into your usb port, while you activate your fitbit. After that, you can download the Apple app onto your iphone/ipad/whatever you have, and every time you're close to the device or you open the app, it will sync everything for you. So as long as you can get somewhere to activate the FitBit (borrowing a computer perhaps) for what takes literally 3-5 minutes, you can use it from that point on without a computer.
I love the FitBit (i did a lot of research, so bare with me here) merely because of the fact that it doesn't only count steps, but also counts miles, can track your blood glucose, tracks your sleep/whenever you're restless throughout the night (i'm an insomniac so I adore this feature), and can even be synced up with your MFP account, to automatically adjust your caloric needs according to your activity level. It is expensive, so if you can gather up the money and computer access for 5 minutes, I totally recommend one!0 -

Edited to add that the dongle is only for computers. Everything with the iPhone happens via Bluetooth.0 -
They make a USB port that plugs into your Apple devices. They make one that has a memory card port also. That way you can activate your fitbit or whatever you use.
Also, if he runs, bikes, or walks, Map My Ride is an awesome program IMO. I use it for biking and hiking and it calculates calories.0 -
Wow, thank you everyone for your thoughts, suggestions, and input. I knew I was asking the right group of people. MFP members are an awesome wealth of info and always so helpful. I'll be sure to pass your advice on to my son. He doesn't visit the community site like I do, but has been a faithful member, himself, since January and has managed to hit his goal of losing 22 lbs. You're input will be welcomed by him. Thanks again.0
