what are some advantages in yoga?

Does it really help firm u or is it more as a stretching type excersise?

Really depends what style you're doing. Certainly helps with stretching, flexibility and has potential to help with upper body strength, some forms are pretty good CV sessions.0

Choose a vinyasa (flow) style of yoga where each pose is kept for a shorter time and you keep moving from one pose to the other without much rest. This "flow" makes it harder and a good cv workout.
I find yoga very helpful for flexibility and for building stability (especially through the core).
Ultimately the main benefit for me has been to slowly learn to listen to my body, accept my limits and, at least during this practice, not to compete with everyone in the class0
