Question for ladies with Mirena

I have kind of a random question for you. With the Mirena, I never know if/when I'm going to get a period, but feel like I am in a constant state of PMS (not the mood, thank God, but the physical symptoms). Has anyone noticed this too? Do you think you've had a harder time losing weight on the Mirena? I feel like I am doing things right, at least MORE right than I was before, and I'm having to battle for every little bit of progress much harder than I think I should at this weight with this much to lose. I know it's not supposed to be EASY by any means, but I would have thought with 70+ lbs to lose, the first few would come off much easier. Any insight?

My doctor says my Mirena has NO side effects, and it's something else causing my mood swings, pms, low libido, etc.
I haven't had an issue losing weight, but then I was never really overweight, just toning up.
But I do have really stabbing/pinching ovulation, and nasty bloating, mood swings and food cravings every month even though there is no actual period.

I have Paragard which is the copper, non-hormonal IUD. I have no side effects with it. I forget it's even there.
  • hi, i think it definatly has an effect with me. i am getting PMS too, they go for a few weeks but when i'm getting them i shift no wieght and my tummy gets bigger. water maybe. also i have tenderness on my chest ans under arms. i've had the mirena in twice now, and i know when the first one had worn out i lost about ten pound so now i put ten pound of the wieght i cann't loose down to it.
although i may not be loosing pounds my body shape is changing and i have deffinatly lost fat from my body. i dont have very much to loose 30lb or so but i can see since july i am much less bulky on my upperbody, arms and back. i am determind to get my mirena wieght off too and i will. (i dont know how, lol) I just have to make it part of my lifestyle.

I actually had to have my Mirena removed. I was also in the constant state of pms, only WITH the mood swings. I felt so terrible for my husband! and I hated feeling like such a B****!! As for my weight, I had lost most of my baby weight (daugher was born in November) got the Mirena in January and from the time I got it till the time I had it taken out (April) I had gained all but 10lbs of baby weight back and nothing worked for my for weight loss. I ate healthy and exercised and NOTHING! It was extremely depressing! My doctor just said some people's bodies just reject the Mirena is all.....

If you think Mirena is causing you problems, maybe you should switch birth control? I'm a big advocate for the Nuvaring. You put it in the Sunday after your period, then take it out the week you're supposed to get your period. My gynecologist said that, unless you take an antibiotic (which affects aborbancy of the hormones), it's 100% effective. It's more efficient than the pill, which you have to take at the same time every day.

I was on the pill for 10 years, and Nuva Ring for a few months after my first daughter was born. My Dr's have told me that I actually can't go back on hormonal birth control like the pill or Nuva Ring because it is attacking my liver. It could kill me, basically. I talked to by OB and an IUD seemed like my only option besides condoms and I'll be honest, I've never used a condom and I don't want to start now! So, I feel kind of trapped with Mirena. We aren't done having kids yet, so I can't do anything like have DH or myself "fixed." I've been doing some research and have found that the #1 complaint that I've seen is the PMS symptoms and the difficulty losing weight. I really wanted to see what women here on MFP, who are trying hard and doing all the right things, are experiencing. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, we aren't going to TTC again until I am at least in ONEderland (then have my tubes tied and no more birth control at all), but I'm having such a hard time getting there I may never get off this thing! Grrrrr.

Thanks for the input and advice ladies. And letting me vent. Maybe it's time to talk to my doc again.
