I gained 2.5 pounds overnight!!

Wth. I've been on a diet for a little over a week now. I had already lost almost 5 lbs from Mar. 24-yesterday. I went 132 calories over yesterday because I read the nutrition labels on my lunch wrong and didn't realize until after I had already purchased the food. I also slacked up on my water and only drank about 4 cups instead of 6 (which I'm working to get up to 8+). Then, at around 12:30 AM I ate a 255 calorie sandwich because I worked 5-10 and missed dinner.
I exercised everyday but Sunday last week and was going to work out yesterday, but I was up until almost 1:00 doing homework (and still didn't finish everything) and was barely awake enough to finish one (of many) of my assignments. While I could have and have got by on 2 hours of sleep and less, I just could not motivate myself to do exercise last night/this morning.
I got on the scale this morning and it read +2.5 pounds.
>:-((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( I weighed myself again just to make sure it and it still said +2.5 lbs. WTFFFFFFFFF
Is this normal or just water weight?

it takes 3500 + calories ABOVE maintenance to gain ONE lb...0

I'm sure it was water, lack of sleep and your body trying to hold on. It will be down in a couple days. I panic like this all the time.0

Don't let the gain bother you. It could be a number of things. It could be water weight, extra sodium or that sandwich still sitting in your tummy. I work all shifts and when I'm working third and eat late at night (my lunch) I find that I gain a pound or two when I weigh myself after I wake up in the afternoon. It's just because my body isn't used to eating that late. I wouldn't let it bother you. Try drinking a lot of water to "flush" out any toxins on your body0

What Toxins? This "your body accumulates/stores toxins" idea is spouted 3,794,261 times a day on here and not one single person yet has been able to actually name these toxins. 'Cause it's bull honkey that we've been fed by an industry hell-bent on taking our dollars from us.0 -
It's completely normal for your body weight to fluctuate a few pounds during the day and overnight. Don't worry about it. Your weight loss won't always be linear and will most likely be a lot of ups and downs, but the trend will be down overall.0

"Toxins" as in extra sodium that can and will make your body bloat and hold on to water. Did I say anything about spending money? I said to drink extra water to flush out the extra TOXINS and yes I am once again saying toxins because all of our bodies have them.0 -

It depends what you're eating, but your body treats many "foods" as toxins. There are also such things as environmental toxins that we come into contact with every day and we assimilate into our bodies, that our bodies then have to process through the liver and eliminate through waste. Yes, detox diets use them as a way to sell their product but what they're not telling you is that our bodies can detoxify without the need for a special type of diet. That doesn't mean toxins don't exist. Ever heard of the phrase "being intoxicated" to describe being drunk? That's because alcohol is poisonous to our bodies and is treated as toxins and this is why it has to be processed before food and fat burning gets halted when you've been drinking.0 -
Its normal I am up 5lb this week..............also I wouldn't sweat being over by a hundred or so calories, just stay consistent. You are doing a great job!!0

Did I say you said anything about spending money? What I said is, the idea of a body building up toxins is pushed by an industry that wants you to spend money. that's where it comes from. I didn't say anyone needs to spend money. And sodium is not a toxin, it's essential to life. Just not in excess.0 -

TIL sodium is a toxin.0

I've always heard to only weigh in once a week because your daily weight can change.0

My heart would not like it if I rid myself of toxic sodium.0 -
Sodium = an essential mineral our bodies need. You know, like WATER. Just not too much, of either.0

Yey for sensible responses to the word 'toxin' :drinker:0

Congrats on the weight you have lost. Are you eating any of your exercise calories back? When you work out every day, your body will hold onto extra water. Also if you don't eat those calories back, your body starts to think you are starving and stops losing too. I only ask this because it's what I did when I started here. I was on the treadmill every day and only eating the limit set by MFP. I lost weight at first but then stopped. You don't have to eat them all back but maintaining at least 1200 NET is good. I found that if I ate them all back at least once or twice a week it helped too.... if only mentally!
But you can't gain that much over night unless you spent hours at an all you can eat buffet. Your body is reacting to your change in schedule and eating habits. You might want to log in your shift hours in the notes so you can start to see if there is a pattern.
I still weigh myself every day but I make one day a week my official weigh in day. Mondays are bad enough so I would go with Tuesday or Wednesday. That's the weight you actually log into here or into a spreadsheet or however you are tracking it. You have to let the other days go if you know you have been what you are suppose to do.
Remember this is a marathon, not a sprint. If you know you didn't eat those calories, then you didn't gain that weight. Drink some extra water, maybe take a day off from exercise to give your muscles a break, keep logging and learning. It will go away.0 -

Like everyone else has said - you didn't gain 2.5 pounds overnight. I weighed myself this morning as well and I was up 2 pounds. I know i'm up because of the dinner I had last night that was loaded with sodium. I will drink my water, carry on and by tomorrow or the next day I will be back to normal. Try not to freak out over daily fluctuations, you will drive yourself mad.0
-
eat some prunes and take a dump, I think you'll see the scale right itself again . . . well, but hopefully not by 2.5 pounds . . . a 2.5 pound **** would be . . . yeah, i've already said too much.0
-
Totally normal fluctuation. Yesterday morning I was down 2lbs overnight, after a big weekend of eating and being over goal. Yesterday I was over by 500 cals, and this morning my weight is the same it was yesterday.
Weight loss isn't linear - you may or may not see daily changes UP or down. If it freaks you out, don't weigh daily. And make friends with your tape measure and start tracking that way - often you'll see progress on the tape while the scale is busy messing with your head.0 -

Your weight will fluctuate day to day. It could be water weight, I know if I go way over on sodium I retain water and get bloated. Also (might be TMI) I have noticed that right before and during that time of the month I "gain" anywhere from 2-5lbs so I don't weigh myself then lol.
Also if you don't do it already try and weigh yourself the same day and about the same time, that way it's consitent, I prefer Sundays (start of the week) first thing in the morning after bathroom and shower. It's the best way to get a consistent weight since the weight fluctuates throughout the day.
Good luck!0 -
no you didn't.

And again.
Go take a poop and chill out.0
