Early Morning Black Out

Here are the facts. I blacked out in the shower on Thursday and did some serious damage to my face and chipped a tooth hitting the bathtub on the way out. I need to make sure this doesn’t happen again. I haven’t been starving myself. Heck, I barely stay under the 1400 calorie quota a day. The day before I blacked out I had actually managed to get just below 1200 calories with an apple for breakfast, tuna noodle gratin for lunch, a bowl of split pea and a grilled cheese for dinner, and a strawberry sundae for dessert. Does that sound like the day of a starving person? No is my first response. I did stay up unusually late (until 1-1:30am) reading a book which I haven’t really done since I started doing this website. I didn’t exercise the day before. But still I woke up and got in the shower and started to feel sick. I thought I was going to throw up and assumed it was related to the stomach bug my sister has had for the past week. It wasn’t. I finished the shower taking intermittent breaks to sit down and then my vision started to go. So I stepped out of the tub to grab a towel and I fell. I didn’t really feel the impact I didn’t feel myself bite through both sides of my lip, but I saw a little bit of blood as I pulled my head up. My vision was still coming in and out and it was becoming hard to think, but I tried to make it to my sister’s bedroom to tell her to call our mom. I fell again on the way back to my bedroom with my sister to get my phone and then I just flopped down on my bed. My vision almost immediately started to clear and I was the one who talked to my mom and told her what had happened. I was a bit shaken up by then but that was it. I wasn’t hungry, but I ate something after that just in case and I have spent the past weekend not keeping track of my food intake to make sure it didn’t happen again. I briefly lost my vision again yesterday, but I think I had just gotten up too quickly. The only other weird things I have noted are that I started my period, but haven’t been bleeding normally (sorry guys reading this) and yesterday I had a dull stomachache to the point of not being hungry most of the day. I also got on the scale this morning and it said I was 6lbs lighter than I was last Tuesday which should be impossible. I’m not pregnant because I’m not sexually active. And I haven’t been doing anything different from the past few months. Any ideas? I’m completely at a loss as to what happened.

    So I had this problem actually just before I joined MFP and started losing weight. I would check it out with your doctor. But for me we did blood work and it came back that I was severely anemic. With having just started your period, I would say that could be it for you too. I would get your iron levels tested.

    1. Are you stressed?
    2. You may have hypoglycemia
    Hypoglycemia causes symptoms such as
    * hunger
    * shakiness
    * nervousness
    * sweating
    * dizziness or light-headedness
    * sleepiness
    * confusion
    * difficulty speaking
    * anxiety
    * weakness
    Hypoglycemia can also happen during sleep. Some signs of hypoglycemia during sleep include:
    * crying out or having nightmares
    * finding pajamas or sheets damp from perspiration
    * feeling tired, irritable, or confused after waking up

    I agree that it doesn't sound like the quantity of calories you are eating is the problem, but my first thought (and one I'm sure many other people on here will share) is that you should go to a doctor. It might not be serious, but blacking out can be a symptom of many serious conditions/problems. No one can/should diagnose you over a website like this.

    How scary! Please go see your doctor. Blackouts are NOT going to happen if you are still eating the calories you have. My Mom has blacked out from dehydration before though . . . how is your water intake?

    See your doctor. The iron loss from your period could explain it, but so could a number of other things. I'd ask for a tilt table test to rule out orthostatic hypotension and neurocardiogenic syncope, as well as the blood tests for anemia and hypoglycemia. Like I said, it could be a number of things. The doctor is the best place to get help.

    It's great there are people trying to diagnose you, but take the advice of the ones who said....SEE YOUR DOCTOR. This is imperative. There is absolutely no way of knowing what could be causing that unless you get some tests done. I wish you all the very best. Please take care of yourself.

    You could still be sufferin from malnutition. I went thru an eposide one time over a year ago at work. I began to pass out my face turned white my lips blue. My sugar dropped down to a diabetic state that could have lead to a coma. My blood pressure dropped. At that point in time I wasn't eatin enough for the amount that I was exercising. Blackin out is also a sign that you may be over exercising and not gettin enough of the proper nutruition that your body needs. You may also be low on iron. You may need to be checked to make sure you don't have low sugar or that you don't have any heart conditions. Blackin out can come from a number of different things. I am not sayin that you are sufferin from malnutrtion but you have to take in account of how much you are exercisin too. Make sure your calories are enough for the amount that you are exercising. Also get your water intake. Get your blood pressure checked often. You may have a condition. Or it just may mean nothing. Sometimes if I stand up too quickly I will feel like I am goin to "black out' it could be a number of different things. Are you losin weight too quickly? Do you have a family history of any disorders or conditions that may cause you to black out. Have you had your thyroids checked. Get checked by a doctor.

    Absolutely go to your doctor as soon as possible. Don't wait until after Christmas. This has already caused you injury once, and you have no way of knowing if and when it could happen again. What if it happened while you were driving? Or on a treadmill? Please talk with your doctor, and make sure he or she is well apprised of the type of diet you have been following, as well as your water intake.

    Get better soon!

    Yep. Call your doctor. This could be for a lot of reasons, some pretty harmless, some very far from it.

    I was just getting over a bad cold once, felt pretty good, probably about 85%, went for a very easy run, and fainted on my doorstep. I went in to the doctor the next day and he was like "Oh yeah, I've been seeing a lot of dizziness and fainting with this virus". Turned out my boss had similar symptoms with the same virus.

    However, a friend of mine was having spells of "graying out" when she stood up, didn't think too much of it, just thought she wasn't eating right/sleeping enough/too stressed out so she ignored it. Three days later, she was in emergency surgery for a ruptured uterine cyst.

    I'm not trying to scare you, but these kinds of issues aren't something you should take lightly.

    Yikes...my first instinct is hypoglycemia or diabetic.

    Also, I don't know if this applies to you, but could you be pregnant? My best girlfriend experienced blackouts while in her first pregnancy.

    Please check with your doctor...that sounds serious and uncomfy!! Feel better :flowerforyou:
  • I appreciate all the comments. I will do research into seeing a doctor. But since I am a poor college student and have no doctor I'm not quite sure what to do about that. Thanks again though. All your responses were helpful.

    Go to your campus clinic. They are generally free for students as their costs are covered in your tuition and fees. If it is something they can't handle, they can refer you to another resource for paying for medical care. I had a cyst rupture in class a couple of years ago and fell out in class. The professor took me to the clinic and they were able to diagnose and give medications but couldn't do anything about removal of the fibroids they found so they referred me to another clinic, which just so happened was a free clinic. I actually had insurance, though, so I ended up going to my regular OB/GYN instead, but it was nice to know that resource was there. Now anytime I have something minor, I go to the clinic on campus instead of seeing my regular doctor.

    Free clinic! Health is priceless it's more important than anything, anything!!! I know it doesn't feel that way in our 20's but truly if we're unhealthy we limit ourselves in what we can do in life.

    If I found myself blacking out it would scare the heck out of me and I would FIND a way to get to a doctor, some doctors will see you at no cost. Sliding fee scales, free clinics as I mentioned, surely something on campus, right??
