What is the current rate for an hours personal training session in your area? I am being asked to pay £57 per hour for a trainer that works at the gym that I already pay £120 per month for! Does that sound reasonable? I am in Berkshire in the UK.

To me that sounds expensive but I really have no idea what the going rate is!

    My gym just outside Glasgow is £30 an hour for a PT. Membership is about £38 a month for peak membership!

    In Central London I was paying £35 but I trialled some that were up to £60

    I'm in Surrey and go to The Gym, membership £15.99 a month and £45 for an hour PT session.

    I'm in London, and the PT rates varies - I pay £38 (each) for four hour-long sessions a month. It's a bit cheaper (just over £36 a session) of you have 8 sessions a month, and a bit more expensive if you buy them outside of those deals as individual sessions. It's at a good quality gym too (Nuffield) and in Central London, where most things are way overpriced. I think what you've been offered sounds very expensive.

    Yep, your suspicion is correct, £57 is a rip off plain and simple. However so is your gym membership fee of £120. May be the reason ehy he/she has the audacity to ask £57 for an hour is because they think you've got loads of money since you already shell out £1440/year for use of the gym.

    £57/hr is like a salary of £72k per year (before tax) is this personal trainer worth that?

    Thanks guys. My Gym membership is expensive but thinking about it it also includes two kids memberships (not that they can use much of it apart from the swimming pool and the creche!!) It also covers any classes I want to do like Bodycombat ect.

    However I feel that as a member PT should be discounted and not sold at a premium!?! Do think I am being ripped off! The PT himself was embarrassed by the prices as the gym sets them and he works for the gym - so the money doesn't go to him - although I am sure he gets a healthy cut!!

    £120 regardless of classes and child membership is still expensive. Ask for a free taster session, then decide. You wouldn't get a discounted rate because it doesn't exist; you can't be a non member and get PT. Ask if he does or be willing to give you sessions outside of the gym and tell him you'll pay him £25 cash in hand. He'd be getting £10 max from the £57 the gym charge!
