Navel piercing and exercise

I have worn a navel barbell for the last 13 years, and have only had small infections once or twice in that entire time. Yesterday however it became really sensitive, red and sore.... i wonder if it's a coincidence, or whether it could be linked to the workouts i've been doing (incorportating alot of crunches) ? Anyone with belly piercings noticed a problem with their piercing and exercise? do you normally take the barbell out when you workout?

I've had mine for 5-ish years and haven't had an infection in that time. I do find that it occasionally rubs or catches on my workout clothes, depending on the workout I'm doing (pilates and yoga are the biggest culprits) but it's never been enough to bother me to any extent.
Maybe try making an extra effort to clean it super well after workouts? Like use salt water wash/spray (like back when you first got it)0 -
It could be rejecting. Go visit a piercer!0

I have had mine for a decade now and I've never had any infection in it at all. It doesn't get irritated or get in the way or snag on anything. Like someone else said, maybe it's a good idea to have a piercer check it out for rejection. You could try salt water soaks like when you first got it done or cover it with a bandaid while you work out in case it is pulling on something.0

I'm with everyone else and if you're worried about it catching on your shirt or anything you can always slap a band aid over it until you get it checked out. maybe with neosporin?0

I really appreciate all your advice...:flowerforyou: i've been doing regular salt water soaks throughout the day both yesterday and today, and there appears to be an improvement... i'm going to continue doing the soaks, and keep my eye on it... if it appears to get worse i'll see a piercer :frown: Thanks once again for the advice0

Hi! I've had mine for several years now, and never had a problem. I would not suggest to put an ointment like neosporin on it, just keep flushing it with the saline solution. I have used Mercuroclear before, which you can buy at Walmar. Bactine spray works well, too.
You might also want to check on the correct size of your piercing. If the bar is too short now for your bends and stretches, it could cause tears. If you are changing your body jewelry often, consider buying pieces that are internally threaded, like those made by ANATOMETAL. This company also offers threaded tapers that you can use to change your jewelry. They screw on, just slide through the hole and you won't scratch the skin with the open end of the barbell.
Good luck!0
