substitutes for what we used to eat

I can't think of anything that I've truly substituted, if I want something, I just work it into my day. If it doesn't fit, then I don't eat it or I'm over my goal. Its that simple.0

Something I had this week is spaghetti squash with meatless veggie marinara. It tasted great and I lost weight both nights I ate it. The best part was its almost entirely fresh vegetables.0

For the chicken wings, try this awesome recipe:
Cauliflower wings:

Also, when I want to have a bigger bowl of 'rice' I add 'cauliflower rice' to my brown rice
yummy

Cauliflower is NOT a substitute for chicken wings... it's cauliflower with spicy sauce... It's also not rice ..
Why can't we just say we're eating cauliflower if you like it, instead of trying to pretend it's something it most certainly is not.0 -
Last year I bought a spiralizer and have made veggies into noodles for spaghetti and meatballs, noodle soups, etc. I've spiralized sweet potato, butternut squash, and zucchini. Mostly zucchini.
If it's the real thing I want then I make room for it, but I can eat a whole dang plate of zucchini "noodles" guilt-free, and the shape/texture of the "noodles" is enough to fool me into thinking I'm eating noodles.0 -
Lol!! Jen! I love it!!
I'm sipping my cauliflower coffee as I type :-)
No, its just coffee but I'm still amazed at all the daily cauliflower recipes that I see here!0 -
VEGGIE BURGERS IN PLACE OF GROUND BEEF BURGERS
LETTICE IN PLACE OF BURGER BUNS
SWEET POTATOS IN PLACE OF REG. POTATOS
CRANBERRY JUICE IN PLACE OF MIXED DRINKS IN BARS0 -
hmmm... I eat real butter instead of margarine
I use spaghetti squash instead of noodles for spaghetti (any other sauce needs real noodles)
I cut out most processed foods and make my own version instead
Otherwise I just watch my serving size0 -

I'm just giving some low calories alternatives to the OP. not saying to 'pretend' to eat something it's not. It's just a way to add more veggies to someone's diet. geez.0 -
You can saute your stir fry veggies in a little bit of low sodium vegetable broth, that way you don't need oil.
I use both oil and broth...depending on the dish.
I am not confused. I use the oil for vegetables when they are not a component of a casserole. If they are...then I use broth since the flavor of the oil will be hidden by multiple ingredients.
Broth...between 5 to 15 calories per cup...oil...120 per TBL. Why add the extra calories if they don't add to the flavor? There are other ways of hitting your fat macro besides using oil...such as PEANUT BUTTER...AVOCADO!!! Things that taste good...0 -

Because it's easier to say "cauliflower rice" than "cauliflower pulsed in a processor until it's in small bits, kind of like rice." People generally understand what "cauliflower rice" means and that it's not actually rice. I mean, you understand that, right?0 -
Buffalo wings, I'll stick with these and just make them fit into my day

I have really liked some of the new things that I have tried...I use zucchini...lots of zucchini! What I have found in some cases is that I like the substitution better than the original ingredient.0 -

No my logic can not comprehend cauliflower rice. Small bits of cauliflower yes, Rice yes... cauliflower rice no0 -

I think that we lie to ourselves when we say that we are eating shoestring/matchstick potato fries...
Surely we all know that we are not really eating shoestrings or matchsticks???0 -

I am from Buffalo NY , home of the chicken wings .. there is plenty of them here every where you go. Being raised on chicken wings , I realize it has contributed to my overweight status. However, now that I do not eat them any longer, I still like the flavor of wing sauce and bleu cheese dressing . I crave it sometimes so I decided to make a substitute .. I just use frank's hot sauce instead of mixing it with butter. My bleu cheese dip is a light blue cheese dressing and I add bleu cheese crumbles to thicken it up a bit.. I use boneless skinless chicken breast that I bake and then cube it up. mmm good .. its way healthier and I get to address my cravings.
What foods have you been able to alter your recipe to not feel so slighted?0 -

Fair enough. Some can and do comprehend the idea, and no one is going to go out of their way to change their terms because you don't like it. We don't sit around debating what to call carbonated drinks or what to call sandwiches made on long rolls. Small bits of cauliflower vs cauliflower "rice" = equally useless debate. Sorry if you're offended by that.0 -

oh god oh god. I love converting recipes into "Clean/Healthy eating" versions.
Here's some of my favorite recipes that I've found on the internet, though:
- Amazing cheese fries, like 200-250 cals per one big serving! (If you put the fries on a cooling rack with a tray underneath, they crisp up much better in the oven)
www.skinnytaste.com/2012/03/skinny-texas-cheese-fries.html
Skillet Lasagna. HUGE portions for this one, 2 cups each! Soooo filling.

Cheesy Jalapeno popper stuffed chicken

crepes

JUST A FEW!0 -
I don't make many substitutions. If I like something, I fit it into my day. What I have been doing is expanding my choices...more veggies and fruits, smoothies, salads. They aren't subs for anything, they are choices....some of which are more satisfying than others. Life's too short not to enjoy what you're eating, but that doesn't mean you eat bad choices all the time.0
-
The biggest change I've made is making many of the things I eat myself. So if I want pancakes, I make them myself rather than use a mix, or if I want chicken fingers, I oven-fry them myself rather than buy frozen.
That said, I still also have the non-homemade versions of foods. Sometimes I make my pizza, other times I order it. Being at maintenance and being pretty active definitely helps, though, since I can eat about 2700 - 2800 calories a day.0 -

I've tried to make my own fries so many times, they always stuck to the foil and never end up crispy. I don't know why. Those look good though.0 -
I still eat all the same foods I used to. Now I just practice moderation and I am so much more active.0
