First of all, if you live near a state park, check their website out for local hikes!
I noticed that the state park had a free 4 mile hike. The first mile was moderate. We had the option of turning around or tackling the remaining three miles which had over eight steep hills to go out and down, crossing creeks and no flat part until getting back to the top of the trailhead.
Last year I couldn't barely walk even half of the first mile. Today I was a beast! I kept up with the hikers going up and down the hills. I was breathing hard the last two,but didn't have to stop.
At the end of the hike I was ready to go again!
Found out they do hikes often and some also visit nearby states (live close to Mississippi and Arkansas) and go on free hikes.
Also it's a great calorie burn!
Check out to see if free led hikes are near you!

I retired last September and my plans are to walk as much as possible.
I recently completed 11 days of the Pennine Way walking about 300k and I still have another 6 days walking planned to complete it.
I also have plans for another 2 long distance walks later in the year.
Will be interesting to see what happens to my weight and, more importantly, my shape after these expeditions.
I was a bit gutted on my walk as I use a fitbit one and I lost it on day 3 so all of my walking counts for zero on the fitbit site. .
Have replacement and will be more careful which pocket I keep it in0 -

Hiking is my favourite exercise, although not so much on the very steep ascents. I don't know what the situation is in other parts of the world but in the UK if you can find an area with public access and are a reasonably competent map reader it is perfectly possible to just go without any organisation being involved. That said I do walk with a club both for the social side and to get new ideas for where to go.0

I love hiking! The steeper the hills the better because it's good for the butt! My lungs don't always agree though.
I don't live near a national park but we have tons of great trails in San Diego. People usually think of the beach when they think of San Diego but we also have mountains.0
