Could someone please explain to me the basics? Do you still need to watch calories?

Hilarious!
Sadly so true! The dogs will be unleashed!
Google it, ask within our group or join a Keto group!0 -
I usually watch my calories just in case my body isnt burning much fat. Also when you low carb you tend to feel fuller so you end up eating less during a day.0

OP, read these! Also, you do still have to watch your caloric intake, although with keto, the fats fill you up so you naturally eat less.0 -

Once the IIFYM crowd sees this, they'll come after you with all sorts of opinion.
The absolute TRUTH is that unless you need/want a ketogenic diet for medical reasons: (morbid obesity / metabolic syndrome / diabetes / PCOS / Hashimoto's thyroiditis, etc., etc.) you can see very successful weight-loss with a moderate deficit and you can retain lean-mass by incorporating resistance/strength training.
If you're adopting it for medical reasons, regardless of the physiology behind it, I'd say join one of the MFP keto groups and keep your questions there. In the general "Food and Nutrition" forum anyone who wants to is free to speak their mind and may give very differing viewpoints and advice from what you're looking for.0
