I was wondering if there were people around who were doing yoga as part of their regular exercise program. I've seen many threads wondering about the calorie burn estimates on MFP. That's not really what I am looking for. I am just wondering as a budding yogini---are there are some people around who commit to hitting the yoga mat 3-4 times a week?

I've fallen in love with a couple of yoga dvds and they have been the mainstay of my exercise. I know that many naysayers would suggest that yoga doesn't burn enough calories to be an efficient use of exercise time, but I would love to connect with some folks who shrug that off and embrace the slow burn of a yoga practice.

I'd love to hear from you!

  • I love doing yoga. It may not burn the calories as much as other exercises but it strengthens your core and you will lose inches. I just renewed my bikram yoga pass today to recommit to 3 days a week. I also love kundalini yoga. I like it best in a studio so I can have my own time. What DVDs are you using. I'd love to try it at home.

I love yoga and I think it's an important part of my all around fitness. I do yoga 2-3 times a week, sometimes more, depending on how my body is reacting to other exercise I'm doing. I have found yoga to be extremely beneficial for keeping my body limber, especially now that I've taken up running. It's also great for strengthening muscles. I find it so challenging and I sweat a lot. I use a HRM and burn approximately 400 calories in 1 hour of yoga. My favourite at the moment is using the p90x yoga video. But I also do yoga classes at my local gym and get a lot out of it.

Yay! I'm so glad to hear that some other folks love their yoga practice. I started with a kundalini yoga dvd by Gurmukh. I find that really useful and i come back to it whenever I feel myself going a bit "nuts".

I'm too intimidated to go to a studio and I currently live in a one-horse town kind of place anyway so I am not sure there are regular classes held. I have really enjoyed the YogaWorks series which include, Beginners, Fit abs and Body slim.. I started doing them at ExerciseTV ON Demand. If I had to guess, I'd say their vinyasa flow classes. I had a HRM monitor for my first two tries at the YogaWorks BodySlim series and clocked around 400 calorie for the 50 minutes. . its probably that high because I'm so heavy, but hey, I'll take it! It doesn't feel like punishment. I love the way my muscles feel afterwards and I am so excited to see my progress. Just today, my heels touched the floor when I was in downward dog--I was so happy!

Hi! I try to do yoga 3-4 times a week- not just for the physical benefits. I love everything about it. I do vinyasa yoga and find myself quite tired at the end of each session- and sweat a lot. Vinyasa burns around 400 an hour while you are toning, sweating, and clearing your mind. Doesn't get any better than that!

If you don't have access to a studio, my favorite Vinyasa dvd is a set of 3 by Baron Baptiste, Seane Corne and Shiva Rea, live at the San Francisco Journal Conference. I don't really enjoy Shiva's teaching style but I love the other two. I bought my set on Amazon :)
