So . . I called Target stores guest relations department due to a defective product I purchased in store but could not return due to the distance I live from the store. The phone rang and (lo and behold!) their guest relations department is located in India. Not a big surprise - the gentleman who answered was very nice but clearly did not speak or understand English that well.

He says he will send me a $5 gift card for my trouble which was about the same cost of the product. I tell him that's fine and he asks me to spell my first and last name as well as my address.

Fast forward about 2 weeks, I open my mailbox and to my surprise . . it is addressed to "Marieduf Profit". (The address was correct by the way.) LOL My real first name is Maribeth and my last name isn't even close to "Profit".

I think I laughed for about 20 minutes.

My maiden name was a fairly common last name and I would still get a lot of mail with it spelled way wrong, and usually with a "K" - I don't want to share the name here, but let's say your name was Campbell and you got mail as Kambale or Kambill. Stuff like that ALL the time!

With the super common first name of Angela, I don't get many misspellings. My grandmother (90 yrs old now) has always added an "I" (Angelia)...even on a quilt she made for me as a baby, it's embroidered that way!

That's funny! And that's after you spelled your entire name for him. I've had some strange experiences with international call centers.

My maiden name rhymed with cheesecutter so that's how most people addressed me until I got married.

I knew someone named David Hunt and at the time he lived in a predominantly german/welsh community where they kept spelling his name Hundt. SO he started saying "David Hunt no D" to which people always replied "How do you spell David without a D???" and he would explain David is spelled normally, Hunt is spelled without a D" and they would STILL spell it Hundt!

I tried to name my children common names, and I think I did a good job. My daughter's name is Emily and she gets mail all the time with the spelling of "amalee"

    Very irritating

With my last name, the common way to incorrectly spell it, is to leave out an l (there are 2 l's in my last name)

One time when I was teaching, after sending notes home all year with the correct spelling of my last name, I get a card at the end of the year, with a ph instead of an f, one l instead of two, and she doubled the o.

    I still laugh at it!

My middle name is misspelled on my birth certificate, so that's a fun one.

That is so funny MB! That is nothing like your name at all...I laughed so hard! Let's just say that with my last name, I have had quite a few crazy pronunciations...but usually it is spelled correctly!
