Antibiotics making your kids fat!!!

So, I was watching Dr. Oz yesterday. I know, I know, Dr. Oz is the devil to most people but his show is such a train wreck, I couldn't look away. Dr. Phil is on before him and I just didn't change the channel in time. His show was on antibiotics making us fat and to watch out for it in children especially. We're all born with so many fat cells and he feels that antibiotics cause our bodies to create more fat cells. I'm curious what everyone else thinks about this "NEW BREAKTHROUGH" in science. What I got out of it was that children prone to infections, like the ears, are destined to become fat because of the antibiotics they are given early on.

^^ /end thread
Actually, it ended the moment I saw the name Dr. Oz. So this thing ended before it even started for me.0 -
You should have turned the TV off when Dr. Phil started and that way you don't have to listen to either one of them.
Antibiotics are not making kids overweight, too many calories and not enough physical activity are making kids overweight. (and adults)0 -
I believe it does, I gained weight after beng on very strong antibotics. And it took some time to get my body feeling normal again. But also let me add that its not the only thngs that makes you gain weight. Kids arent just fat from antibiotics. But it does put a few pounds on, but NOT all the pounds.0

My youngest had myriad health issues when very young was always on antibiotics and very strong ones plus steroids for at lesat 2 years and was under weight for some time and now is a healthy weight at age 5, I was told the steroids slowed down his growth a bit but since stopping he is recovering. We have been going to CHOP (Children's Hospital of Phila) since he was an infant and I have seen many developmental (among other) doc and not one mentioned this as a potential issue.
I often say in my professional life correlation does not imply causality. That is to say just because two things are related DOES NOT mean one causes the other or vice versa. Maybe children that end up over weight also have health problems requiring antibiotics at young ages due to mitigating factors such as parental care, health care access and home life. Nothing happens in a vacuum and in the real world it is very rare that A+B = C and that is a constant.0 -

Nope. People get fat from eating too much. It's always easier to blame something other than too much food and not enough exercise.
I took antibiotics for the first time ever at the age of 28. But I was fat age 12-14 due to overeating.0 -
My son and I would dispute that claim. I spent much of my childhood on antibiotics for 6 weeks at a time due to ear infections. Always a skinny child and haven't had weight issues as an adult. My son has taken a lot of antibiotics in his short life and is also a skinny child. Good try Dr. Oz.0
