*****ake mushrooms -- are asterisks really necessary?

I've seen a couple of posts in this forum that use asterisks in spelling the Japanese-derived name of a certain Asian mushroom (also known as black forest mushroom). Will the site administrators pull posts that spell out the name of the mushroom (even if you spell it correctly, with double-i in the first syllable)? Or are there people who are actually offended by the full name (which has nothing to do with the four-letter English word for solid animal waste)? Just curious if anybody knows.

My posting making a reference to the German army under H*tler was edited. I mean really, you can't say " I am not a food N*zi". Evidently not. Lol0
-
I think it might be over-enthusiastic auto-correct.
Tempted to start a post asking if anyone is from a certain English town now just to see what happens :laugh:0 -
Uhhhhh, ****ake? What's the big deal? Its a mushroom....why so serious?0

I'm not saying it should be censored. I was just surprised to see people using self-censoring for it, and wondered why.0 -
It's spelled shiitake...isn't it?0
-
The fact that the censors stick a bunch of asterisks in that word doesn't mean they have something against mushrooms. In fact, I suspect they enjoy them a lot.0
-
The whole phrase should be bleeped out, on the basis that all ********* are disgusting0
-
Shiitake mushrooms are delicious. Period.
Spell it right and it won't get beeped.0 -
You can't shop at ****s either
It is the sites auto bleep. As you can see the mushrooms spelled correctly do not get corrected.

Thanks for the explanation that it's an automated process.0 -

it's automatically censored out. The UK town of S****horpe (Scun.thorpe) has the same problem.
anyway, here's a funny BBC comedy clip on you tube about sh.itake mushrooms:

Eh, call them pooptake, then.
Edit: Totally kidding, btw.0 -
Overenthusiastic autocorrect, yes. Even in the German department here, the word "****" which just means thick/fat, is censored. But it's also a form of Richard in English. Strange lot you are.0

LOL, the residents of S****horpe and Penistone in England have met this sort of nonsense before.
Edit - LOL it happened !! C U Next Tuesday0 -

Thanks! too bad that doesn't work in links for posting pictures.0 -
It's the double-minded nature of this site. On the one hand, they say we have to be 18 or over to register. Then, on the other hand, they say we can't use "adult" language. There is also a sporting goods store whose name can not be typed in these forums.
I don't get it either. It's pretty stupid, I think.0 -
I wouldn't think that it would get filtered by the correct spelling.
The filter has been programmed to recognize certain combination of letters... even if they appear within another word...
For example:
abc****e****ghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0 -

Definitely both. It's a direct 1:1 ratio.
You're welcome.

Thanks! it was my son's birthday cake. He turned 15 last Saturday. Layers of chocolate cake, chocolate icing, peanut butter/cream cheese frosting (whipped up so airy!), then a genache on top to emulate the chocolate coating of a Reese's.0 -
This is in line with not being able to post the sporting goods store ****'s0

Are people supposed to be using social media at work though?
Seriously, I have never understood the point of designating certain words as "cuss words" or whatever. It's not just this site, all of society seems fubar to me. *shrugs*

First I apologize for the bad wording, I was posting from my phone.......at work
As a member of this site for many years I appreciate the fact I don't have to hide the screen (if I am not moderating) from my friends grandson. Or be embarrassed when I suggest to a co-worker to use the site.
There has to be a line in the sand somewhere. I think today we are just too used to being able to do whatever we want, we hate to be told what to do.
The bottom line to me is, that someone owns and runs this site. He makes up the rules, we sign the contract and use the site for free.
If I cant say **** or **** it is a small price to pay for almost 41 pounds lost, 100 people I would call friend, keeping this weight off and paying nary a dime (except when I go to meet said new friends!!) I have friends on 'programs' over these same years that have lost and gained the same pounds, and THEN some.
TOS........small price to pay. Again, IMHO, as an MFP member. :flowerforyou:0
