You are gonna start having problems with important updates and such. You may also start getting more spyware because your OS cannot do security updates. Make sure that you have a good anti-virus and spyware program to help with those problems. It is unfortunate that they are cutting support, but change is inevitable. lol0

I agree that stuff shouldn't just start disappearing because support has ended. My main machine is Windows 7 but I have an XP virtual machine and haven't noticed any issues yet. Not sure it would be the same though.0

I have an XP virtual machine as well, I checked it after reading this and everything seems fine. What programs in particular are you seeing disappear? I'm just curious.0 -

First off I'm throwing the BS flag on the OP for saying programs just disappeared off her computer. The fact MS is ending support for XP has ZERO effect on the current state of your machine. It's not like MS is going in deleting your apps. If something disappeared you or your IT department removed it.
Second, regarding this statement. This is alarmism. You know the easiest way not to get spyware, viruses, etc? Don't click every single link people send you. Actually read pop-up warnings on websites to see if they sound fake. Be suspicious. I have no virus protection, spyware protection, and don't even have the Windows firewall enabled on my PC. Not once have I gotten a virus. The bottom line is if you get a virus it's because you were tricked into installing it. The same goes for spyware. You know that free app you downloaded? Yup, probably came packaged with spyware. That's why it's free! Dur!
Read, pay attention, and for jeebuses sake learn to use the machine you sit in front of for 8 hours a day.0 -

Anyone else have Windows XP? I have it at work. As of today support for XP has ended. I've had programs disappear of my computer, including ones I need to use! Has anyone else with XP noticed issues today since support has ended for it?
What kind of applications are disappearing? You should still be able to use XP. Microsoft hasn't done anything sinister here...0 -
   I have it. And I can't afford anything new or upgrades. Depressing.0

You could always look into Linux!0 -
Yes to these and the others that said MS would not be deleting anything... the only thing I can thing of that could POSSIBLY be the issue is that your internal IT folks are preparing to upgrade your office to Windows 7 to protect their data and therefore they MAY be turning off services to upgrade them to be compatible with the upcoming OS upgrade... other than that I can't think of one single reason your applications would just "disappear".... try calling your help desk I'm sure they can help you far more than we can....You may also start getting more spyware because your OS cannot do security updates.

A brutally honest way of putting it, but nonetheless true. I don't believe Microsoft did this to you. Virus, malware, spyware, perhaps. More information is needed in order to diagnose.0 -
there is no way that programs would disappear and MS discontinuing of XP updates be the factor that caused it.
also pretty sure this is a troll.
It will make your more vulnerable to viruses, and eventually you wont be able to use some software or view certain web content because it wont be compatitble with the last version of XP.0 -

For example, performing a basic upgrade on a normal app can prompt the user that they could install an add-on toolbar for free, usually users are flying through upgrades so quick, they overlook the check boxes to opt out of additional "free add-ons" that are ad/spyware.
Users who open emails that contain links for phishing sites
And then there are the users who rely on fake PC maintenance programs like MyCleanPC which only ADD to the ad/spyware problem.
Edited because I'm a grammar dummy trying to comment on forum threads on my iPad.0 -
I still have XP at work, as does the majority of the UK public sector. Fortuantely the UK government have paid off Microsoft to extend the support for a further year to give them time to upgrade us.0

I have XP at home that I use as a slave for a few external drives.
Basically, it acts as a poor mans music and movie server. I have it plugged directly into my television and entertainment system.
I did see a LOT of options at pawn shops for upgrades.
I saw a bunch of laptops with Windows 7 and Office pro (I need Access database) for under $200.00.
I will probably buy one and toss my old XP machine.0 -
My Control Center 4 which I use to scan up documents is not coming up. I get the pop up that says it's searching for it. I used it yesterday and it was working fine. I tried re-booting my computer (which takes 15 minutes, but that's a whole different issue itself). It's also strange that when I got to add/remove program (I had to download something and seemed to have missed a step that also downloaded something else) that the ONLY thing listed is all Microsoft items. Nothing else is listed. (Not even systems I currently have open)
My only concern with upgrading is with the accounting system we use. I know we cannot upgrade our internet explorer (not that I use it most of the time anyway) because our accounting system isn't compatible with the newest versions. (And since I am the main one to do all the accounting, I need it to work!) I do have a call into your sales/support person for our accounting system, to see what I can upgrade to. I also have a call into our person that does IT for us, to see when he can come. (We are a small office, it's me and 2 I work for. I'm the assistant here)
They are looking at getting my a new whole new computer. I really want Windows 7 and Word 2010. I have those at home and love them.0 -

Our workplace switched to Windows 7 because the Microsoft support was ending was for Windows XP. We switched to Windows 7 about two months ago.0 -

I've got:
1 laptop of Windows Vista
1 laptop on Windows 7
5 desktops on Windows 7
1 laptop on Windows 8 (can bite me)
1 desktop running Ubuntu Linux 13.10
1 server running Ubuntu Linux 12.04
2 servers running Windows 2012
I think I've got a problem hoarding computers, but I don't have the problem that is Windows XP at home.
Oh, and my company actually reloaded Windows XP (32-bit) on all new Core i5 machines with Windows 7 Pro (64-BIT) already installed. That's because my IS department is a bunch of lazy relics.0 -

Demand to do Windows Updates in store before purchasing or make sure that their return policy allows you to get a full refund. The vast majority of operating systems in Pawn Shops (which are not specifically computer stores) are pirated and Windows Updates will reveal that (and not let you use the OS anymore). Or turn the computer over and check the COA against what is installed. If the COA doesn't jive with what's installed, ask to see their MS Refurbishers license. It's also important to note that because Pawn Shops aren't specifically computer shops with employees that know about computers, you may be walking into a few viruses you'll have to clean up. You'll also want to check state laws on Second-Hand Dealers and make sure that you see a copy of their SHD license. If you don't, the computer MIGHT be stolen, and the shop might be committing a felony, and by purchasing the computer you could be as well; it's just a nightmare for a deal that might not be that good anyway, and it's always better to be safe than sorry. AFAIK Pawn Shop licenses are more stringent than a general SHD license, so they should def. have one.0 -

I'm starting to think my issues with the Control Center 4 and the ending of XP Support might be some freaky coincidence that they happened on the same day. (though I still want to know where the games on my computer went! I liked playing solitaire or spider solitaire on my lunch break occasionally)
And then the added issues with a file I'm working on today is really not helping any!0 -

I think your IT person will be able to take care of this for you. Hope they get you upgraded soon!0
