How does a manual treadmill work?

I've been thinking about getting a treadmill, but can't afford a motorised one. Can anyone tell me how the manual ones work? I can't see how you'd get the belt to move!

    As you walk the belt moves, rather than you walking on a moving belt.

    You drive the belt manually as you walk the faster you walk the faster the belt moves ect.......hard going I should think !

    I was just looking at those online yesterday! It's manual, as in you move the belt by stepping. I'd be interested too, if anyone has used one and how they like it!
