Shoulder injury vs exercise!

Hai; I know most people don't expect a 21 year old to have had a severe shoulder injury, but surprise! I dislocated and relocated my own shoulder when I was 16...I fell going upstairs (don't ask, please). It's always been painful and aggravating, but 1 1/2 years ago I decided to work for my step-dad's company as a pressure washer; we washed semi-trucks, vans(one van yard had almost 200 vans in it), cars, but mostly big trucks and I was the brusher b***h (My name for my job). I worked with him 12 hour days 6-7 days a week(it was a wicked good job, intensive workout for my arms, abs and legs) and when I finally moved out on my own I moved out of town, thus finding a new job and I gained 30lbs and my shoulder kills me. Some really cold days it hurts so much I sit in bed and cry, other days I'm so angry about it I ignore the searing, throbbing pain and I workout then spend my night with a hot water bottle and a bottle of advil (sometimes T3's) while my bf spends hours massaging my shoulder. I can't keep doing this though. I'm damn determined to lose weight and gain a fit, firm body but I can't just cut out planks, push-ups, and jumping jacks for one pathetic body part that just won't stfu. I've seen a chiropractor and all they said that I could do was have a hot bath after...Are there any, I don't know, less incentive arm, lats and shoulder workouts I could replace the others with??? If not, I'm really thinking about just bucking it off at the armpit >:S HALP!

My bestie sustained a hit during a derby game at the start of the year and hasn't been able to skate since. After 6 months of pain she finally saw the Dr and found that she had a tear in her tendon. Ever thought that you might have really done some serious damage? You should absolutely get it checked out. I had a motorcycle accident when I was 17 and destroyed myself good and proper so I understand the chronic pain... I still think looking into it is a good idea.0

Have you seen a good registered massage therapist? I ask because I had a rotator cuff injury to my shoulder which I lived with for two and half years. I eventually couldn't sleep on that side, lift up my arm beyond a certain point, let alone do up a bra. If I just turned my wrist the wrong way, I would almost pass out with the pain to my shoulder. I finally saw a really good massage therapist, and in two (I swear) TWO 45-minute (...OK...pretty gruelling) sessions, the problem was gone. That was 18 months ago, and my shoulder has been fine ever since.0

This is definitely one where you see a doctor, particularly a specialist.0

I dislocated my right shoulder twice and finally ended up having surgery on it. That much pain is NOT normal and you should get yourself to an orthopedic doctor pronto. He will probably send you to physical therapy, which it sounds like you need. Go to your therapy appointments and do not skip them. Physical therapy is critical to heal whatever is wrong. In the meantime, I would not do any bodyweight exercises that utilize the shoulder. I would stick to isolations, like shoulder presses with very light or no weights. You don't want to rest the area completely because moving around encourages bloodflow which encourages healing. But do NOT tax the area or work to fatigue.
Best of luck to you. I know how it is to have a bum "wing."0 -
I feel three years ago and ripped all the tendons in my shoulder. It was the worst thing ever. I still have problems now and again. I did get cortizone shots and did a bunch of rehab exercises to strengthen it back up.
Sometimes when I sleep it really gets bad. I would suggest that you go seek some medical help. See a good DO and see what they have to say. Sometimes we have to back track to get better.
Hang in there!0 -
Woweee Girl! That was some intense job you did washing trucks!
And your shoulder felt fine during that time? :noway: :drinker:
Maybe there was permanent damage done that needs to be addressed by a professional??
I recently did a good number on my shoulder doing tricep dips at the gym.
Turned out to be "fixable" by a chiro adjustment and a couple of massages.
And REST! I did some easy stretching and mild cardio, but no weights etc.
Get thee to a good doctor............ many choices! Acupuncture is good for pain.
Best of luck and continue taking good care! Good guy you have to massage it for you! :flowerforyou:0 -
Thank you all! I'll defiantly get to a doc as soon as I can, but unfortunately, I live in a very small town and GOOD doctors are hard to come by. Everything else is so expensive, and I know it's worth it in the long run, but it'll have to wait until mid January before I can even make an appointment with an acupuncturist or a massage therapist...As with all injuries some days are better/worse then others. Usually on really good days, after a really good sleep, I do work it...maaaybee a little more then I should, but I don't want one fit, nice, slim arm and the other to have a bloody chicken wing, ya know? As all of you insisted I'll definitely go to a doctor asap. Thank you soo very much0
