I am watching a TV show about people who are getting a makeover to their current fitness schedules and what they eat. They go in and clean out their fridge and cupboards.
So the usual things were getting thrown out, boxed mac and cheese, granola bars with loads of sugar, take-out boxes, ice cream, etc. Then I saw something absolutely crazy in that box of "bad" stuff. A bag of mini white potatoes.
Since when is a natural product such as a potato a terrible thing? Meanwhile, when they introduce their new eating plans, it's - low fat/calorie reduced/non fat yogurt, half a whole wheat bagel (store bought), low fat lunch meat such as turkey.
How is calorie reduced lunch meat better for you than a vegetable that came out of the ground?

potatoes are full of vitamians and minerals and have few calories, but if you put butter sour cream and bacon on it, thats were the fat comes from. boil or bake potatoes and put some salsa on them, yummy, under a 100 calories, Take hashbrowns and brown with a little canola oil and onions, add an egg and it is another great options for breakfast, lunch or supper!0

potatoes are full of vitamians and minerals and have few calories, but if you put butter sour cream and bacon on it, thats were the fat comes from. boil or bake potatoes and put some salsa on them, yummy, under a 100 calories, Take hashbrowns and brown with a little canola oil and onions, add an egg and it is another great options for breakfast, lunch or supper!

I don't think the calorie count of the potatos is in question. I've heard that potatoes are loaded with starches and carbs. plus all the "crap" we tend to put on them, butter/margerine, sour cream, baconbits, chili, processed cheese, etc...... And as for those shows, it is about advertising, and product placement.0

Hotpickes? I think the above poster hit the nail on the head... advertisement placement! Nothing wrong with potatoes in moderation same as any other food. No, bagels and lunch meat are NOT healthier than a basic potato. They are processed foods, a potato is not. Unless the bagel is homemade and you know exactly what it contains it could be 600+ cals!! They are HUGE anymore, a portion size for a bagel is actually 1/4 of a bagel.:glasses:

As someone who works in the entertainment industry, I can definitely say that product placement is definitely involved. More and more ad revenue is starting to be derived that way, especially since more people are DVRing shows and skipping through commercials.
As for potatoes, carbs and starches aren't bad for dieters. Too many calories are. If you keep your calories in moderation, carbs and starches are good for you. You need them as part of a healthy diet, and carbs from potatoes are much better than carbs from sugars.0 -
Give me my potatoes or DIE!!!!! Moderation, moderation, and more moderation. It's usually all the junk we put on them that will get ya! Granted I eat more sweet potatoes now but still enjoy my regular ones. Just no cheese and bacon and sour cream and a ton of butter!0

I agree! I love sweet potatoes too (sliced really thin and drizzled with olive oil, then baked) but I adore my white potatoes as well. I never put all that other stuff on them either. There's nothing better than an oven baked potato, with crispy skin, and nothing on it. Yummy!
I just thought to myself, this is a nutrition coach? And the product placement thing, you are so right. They had the labels covered with a piece of tape, but if you shop at a certain grocery chain here in Canada, you could tell what the product was. Never thought of that before.

The Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp show (which you are obviously watching) is awesome, effective, intelligent and btw Canadian, A+++ !
It’s the fact it’s a WHITE potatoes it got removed. Yes it’s ok and natural which is always a plus but there are better wholegrain items. I believe russet potatoes for example have more fiber and sweet potatoes have less carbs hence their decision to remove these items from the individual’s fridge. It could also be to wean the person off of a potato addiction or the temptation to eat something the individual always puts sour cream, cheese and other fatty junk on.
Sandwich meat contains protein which keeps you fuller longer. Yes it does contain sodium but there are a lot of more natural products out now that are lower in sodium and nitrates.
This is NOT about product placement b/c all name brands are blocked off with coloured tape, you never see anything.0 -

Not true. Carbs provide your body with energy....too many carbs that are not burned off, turn to fat. The same thing is true with anything though. Too much protein, turns to fat if it is not used.
Carbs get a bad rap...but really, when that first came to light, and because of Atkins, people cut out their donuts, their cookies because of carbs...but really, they were just taking the junk food out. It's not carbs....it's the junk food that they ate before.
Eat your carbs! Everything in moderation is fine!0 -
I remember watching an episode of XWeighted and Paul Plakas was doing the cupboard purge and said to the woman trying to lose weight "you can't have mashed potatoes on a diet". I thought (and actually said it outloud to the TV) "of course you can, in moderation and adjust what you put in them!"
I've lost 25lbs this past year and I ate potatoes. I love them! I avoided processed foods though.0 -
Just curious - what do they do with all that food they purge from people's homes? I know a lot of it is not-so-good food, but it just seems like a huge waste.
Especially those potatoes, LOL. They could have given them to me!
I guess it all boils down to different things work for different people.

Watch Food, Inc. and then tell me it isn't about $- it is. The best part of living in AMERICA (yay) is freedom of choice. I will choose an organic potato over processed, genetically modified, lunch "meat" containing animal parts, bread containing bleached flour and refined sugar any day! I could put some whole grains in a box of poop- it will still be poop. It's time we wake up and realize what is driving the world's food supply.0

you can put bacon on your potatos try this product via hungry girl- try crumbled bits by oscar myer or americas choice 1tbs per 30cls and also reduced fat sour cream

Hopefully at least the dry-goods get donated but whatever dry-goods these people have i.e. tuna and beans those are considered healthy so they don't get tossed.
Same as ‘What Not To Wear’. Hopefully the tossed out wardrobes go to charity or shelters. Although the homeless don't needs a cheetah tube dress necessarily, most of it can go to good use and aren’t a lot of clothes not eco friendly (unless its cotton)? Donating it will at least keep its life going to keep it out of the dump.0 -

Wow, it was just a simple statement - why toss out the white potatoes?
Although each food group of farmers do promote their product from time to time especially after getting bashed in the media i.e. beef w/ hormones, eggs and chicken mal-treatment + cholesterol and dairy being, I dunno whatever the purists think is wrong with it and to promote sales to keep the economy and farming industry strong I don't think food producers are the most evil producer of consumer goods. Let’s just all attack pharmapsudical and be done with it, ha ha ha!! LOL, jokes0 -
heather, what channel is that show on? CBC? I wonder if I can download it. I hardly ever watch TV TV anymore. Everything is watched on my computer without crappy *kitten* commercials. There's enough product placements in the shows themselves the last thing I need is commercials to go along with.0

Now, I'm a meat and potatoes kinda gal. lol BUT, I happen to know that potatoes probably should not be consumed more than 5 times a week due to the starch in them. One thing I know is that it makes the weight cling on. I ate less carrots(which also has starches) and less potatoes combined with less carbs and less sugar and the weight started coming off. I also have a question about canola oil. Is it better for you than olive oil? I have completely switched from vegetable oil and canola oil to olive oil, and to me, the food's flavor is brought out alot better.0 -
Potatoes are fine but if you are trying to lose weight then you want to eat sweet potatoes or yams instead of the white ones. The white potatoes do not have as much fiber and will spike your blood sugar faster than the sweet potatoes will. This is why they didn't want them to have it. I'm sure that product placement factors into the show but not in this case.0

Nothing wrong with potatoes (of any sort) as long as it fits within your calorie goals for the day. If we're talking about "nutrition", then yes, of course there are better options. A bagel (whole-wheat or otherwise) however, is NOT one of those better options... so if they recommended a bagel while tossing out a potato I'd be a little curious as to their reasoning.
There are few dietary killers worse than bagels.0
